HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX: Mercedes heads to Hungary in fine form, having won three of the past four races. We preview the best BETDAQ bets in Sunday’s race.
Having had his fair share of misfortune so far this season, it was time for lady luck to smile upon Lewis Hamilton in Silverstone last week, his home grand prix no less. Putting in stellar performances in each of the weekends sessions, Hamilton breezed past the finish line in first, having qualified on pole, set the fastest lap of the race and lead every lap; the coveted so called grand slam. That’s his third of the season, matching the record for the most grand slams in a season with less than half the season gone! Truly sensational stuff from the Briton.
Sebastian Vettel will be all too aware of these facts, having seen his championship lead cut to just one point, in part due to a late tyre puncture from degradation at the British grand prix. Even without such an issue, Ferrari looked quite off the pace as they have typically done here in the past. Though Vettel still leads the drivers championship, the constructors championship is drifting further and further from Ferrari, largely due to bad luck but also because Kimi Raikkonen has not especially pulled his weight in the second Ferrari.
The Hungarian grand prix up next looks set to be the stage for an intense battle between these two teams. Hamilton has won more races here than any other driver and will be eager to finally take the championship lead. Ferrari on the other hand will be optimistic that their shorter wheel base and tyre friendly chassis will give them that competitive edge around what is a very short track.
Red Bull Racing in particular will be happy to be going to a shorter track. The team seemed to take a relative step backwards at the Silverstone GP despite most people expecting the track to be to their strength. The Hungaroring offers a great opportunity for them to bounce back, with incremental engine and chassis improvement really adding up for them so far this season.
McLaren are in fact by far the most successful constructor team at Hungary, having 11 wins to Williams’ 7. Though they won’t realistically be looking to win here, the track is sympathetic to the weaker power units and will tax the chassis far more, which is McLarens strongest characteristic at the moment. Perhaps another small points haul is there for the taking, if they can prevent the engine from blowing up!
Finally, expect a very tight midfield battle with Force India and Toro Rosso especially well suited to a track like this. Both teams have done great jobs in the aero department and with drivers well matched to boot, this fight could come down to the wire.
Outright:
Hamilton and Vettel should be the class of the field and very closely matched at this track. Perhaps a small edge once again goes to Hamilton given his past form but nothing more than a hair. That makes Vettel the clear value bet for Hungary this week at a price of 3.15, a far more attractive price than Hamilton at 1.47.
