BIG-HITTING DAQMAN SQUARES UP TO PRICEWISE Not many days left to go to-to-toe on the Flat and Daqman wants to top 80 winning hits over Pricewise. He’s pulled 308 points clear, and has the low BETDAQ overrounds on his side, so can afford big-odds combination punches today in the 1.50 and 3.35 Newmarket, and the 2.45 and 3.55 York. The scores are Daqman 78, Pricewise 19.
BATTLE FIRST BLOOD TO O’BRIEN
1.50 Newmarket (Cornwallis Stakes) Stalls 11 and 12 have won two of the three runnings of this race since it was moved from Ascot, but low numbers took both sprints on the Rowley Mile last Saturday.
If we look at the possible pace for clues, we find that the animals in stalls 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 9 have all led, so there could be an early scrap among the low numbers.
It’s been won with a penalty only once in the decade but Sound And Silence has done it before at York, though Abel Handy was only half a length away (Angel Force, To Wafij behind).
Aidan O’Brien’s Battle Of Jericho drops back from 6f and 7f to the minimum trip today, and you get the feeling he could outpower those pacesetters. I took the 7.8 on BETDAQ this morning, with a stakes saver Sound Of Silence. They seemed the strongest in the race.
FLY WITH ANGEL THE SHARP BET
2.25 Newmarket (Oh So Sharp Stakes) Most winners of this were a few pounds short of a Classic placing but Miss France (2013) took the 1,000 Guineas, coming over here for this to check out her potential on the Rowley Mile.
Freddy Head has a similar plan today for Efaadah but waits for the Fillies’ Mile later on (3.35), opposing Nyaleti who may hold the key to this race.
She was second in the Rockfel two weeks back, with Gavota (checked in her run), Hikmaa, Butterscotch (second to Clemmie earlier) and Elizabeth Bennett following her home.
But she had been a head behind Dark Rose Angel when they were second and third in the May Hill Stakes, won by Laurens, another Fillies’ Mile contender later on.
I Can Fly quickened clear of a big field at Dundalk, but Anna Nerium had Special Purpose and One Minute closing towards the finish when she scored at Salisbury (6f).
Since Ryan Moore knows the Rockfel form through Butterscotch, his switching to the unexposed I Can Fly (4.6 on BETDAQ) seems significant, while Frankie Dettori on Dark Rose Angel (6.2) has the edge on the form we know.
COLORI SCHEME COULD PAY OFF
2.45 York When Highland Colori won this big-field handicap last season, he was not well drawn (in 14) and giving 4lb to runner-up Home Cummins, who now concedes 7lb, though neither has won since.
Both are in the first 10 stalls this time. So, too, are Cambridgeshire third, Cote d’Azur, the Lincoln winner, Bravery, and the improver, Zabeel Prince.
You can back three or four in this and still worry about the other, so I’ll stick with the cunning plan for 12.5 BETDAQ offer Highland Colori, 10lb lower than last year and with the ground come in his favour.
3.00 Newmarket (Challenge Stakes) Only one winner of this over the age of four in the decade, but Limato is swerving next weekend’s Champions Day sprint for an easier contest here.
Limato has to have the going on top, so has been lucky with the weather, as he was when winning another big autumn prize, the Prix de la Foret, at last year’s Arc meeting.
Though his best form in between – without winning – has been in sprints (placed in both the Diamond Jubilee and the July Cup), there’s talk of going for mile races next season.
FORM ON THE SIDE OF 9.0 EFAADAH
3.35 Newmarket (Fillies’ Mile) Aidan O’Brien is on a four-timer in this today, having won it the last twice with two champions, Minding and Rhododendron.
But the Ballydoyle blanket bombing has lost some weapon power, with one of his trio – Happily – withdrawn this morning, leaving Magical and September. They front the market but it’s a stronger renewal than a blind bet on O’Brien’s.
The French, who are missing from the Oh So Sharp Stakes (2.25) they have won with a Guineas heroine, are here with Freddy Head’s Efaadah.
Efaadah finished in front of Wild Illusion at Chantilly before that one won the fillies’ Criterium, the Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc day (Magical only fourth).
Magical had been short-headed by Happily in the Moyglare with September a well-beaten third. Laurens is also held on this collateral thread but there’s no link with Magic Lily, who ‘could be anything.’
Magic Lily won her only outing ‘like a machine’ (quote unquote a racereader friend) and she runs here for the same connections as Wild Illusion.
Efaadah (at 9.0 on BETDAQ) and Magic Lily (7.4 offers) are the wrong prices because of the reputation of the O’Brien contingent.
THE BELL IS RINGING FOR ROCKS
3.55 York Stall six has won both runnings of this and could be backed for the hat-trick, Brimham Rocks having a better chance than the 19.5 being put up on BETDAQ.
Brimham Rocks had to give 13lb to the winner when second in the Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell but the filly that scored that day, then a vastly underrated 74, shot up to 90 on completing a four-timer.
Face The Facts has been hiked 11lb and Gold Star hit 13lb for winning a class 3 at Wolverhampton. As a Nathaniel, could continue on the upgrade but his stable has had two AW winners only, nothing on turf, among 22 losers, in the last two weeks.
The Grand Visir went for home too early off a fast pace over CD in the Melrose (Dominating well beaten off). Silvestre De Sousa is asked to improve on that.
EAGLE’S BETDAQ SWOOP AT 12.0
4.10 Newmarket (Old Rowley Cup) Derby failure Crowned Eagle looked the part for this on the last day, staying on well over shorter on today’s course, first run after being gelded. I took 12.0 in the BETDAQ orange, early mouse.
The aptly-named 10.5 offer Duke Of Bronte (by Mount Nelson; check it out) stepped up to win at this level at Ascot on soft on the last day and had earlier beaten Melting Dew a neck at Newbury on firm.
There remains nothing between them now at the revised weights but Duke Of Bronte is the improver and Melting Dew’s cheekpieces have been discarded.
Torcello was only sixth behind them then but, because he won well over CD a fortnight back, carries a penalty and is at the front of the betting.
Will the cheekpieces do a better job for High End, who has gradually stepped up in both class and trip in just four runs since July, whereas Humble Hero had to drop down again to class 3 to get off the mark in handicaps.
