DAQMAN’S SUPERNAP WINS BY 22 LENGTHS: Daqman landed a hat-trick of best bets with a supernap which scored by 22 lengths at Clonmel yesterday, giving him 15 winners in eight days. Counter Shy (5.5 offers) beat Banditry at Worcester and was the ‘moral’ at Uttoxeter, beaten little more than a length, giving weight to the winner.
IT COULD BE TIZZARD’S TURN HERE
1.50 Cheltenham Last year’s winner of this 2m chase, Un Beau Roman, hasn’t won since but is 2lb lower now. Exitas is on a hat-trick and Kapstadt will be helped by this return to a left-handed track.
But the intriguing match in the race must be Robbie Power (Mick Thomic) versus Bryan Cooper (Shanahan’s Turn).
Colin Tizzard’s pair were 8-1 and 10-1 this morning: Mick Thonic is a low jumper (sounds dangerous on this course) who likes to get on with it. Shanahan’s Turn won the Galway Plate for Henry De Bromhead. He is a follower who could be suited by the drop back in trip on this tough course.
2.25 Cheltenham (Steel Plate And Sections Novices Chase) I previewed this race earlier in the week and warned against following the winner at Cheltenham next year.
In fact, first and second home in 2016 have just one win – in a five-horse race – to their credit since.
And there’s a warning on the day today that the hot favourite, Finian’s Oscar, is carrying an 8lb penalty and is the only one of today’s quartet without Cheltenham experience.
Moreover, first-time chasers have won this seven times in eight seasons. That, and the weight concession, suggests William Henry is tasty at 3.8. on BETDAQ, with Nicky Henderson saying that he’s schooled over fences really well.
THE MORNING CASH WAS FOR CANTLOW
3.00 Cheltenham (Cross Country) Only Enable has been better to me in recent years than Cause Of Causes, who has given this column 44.0, 10.0 and 5.0 BETDAQ big-value successes at the Cheltenham Festival, including the cross-country title over today’s course and distance.
Another famous name for this column, Balthazar King, did the double in 2013 but Cause Of Causes has never been known to score on his reappearance (recent November-December start-back form 000), though he won over hurdles in 2012 after being kept going in the summer.
Auvergnat, a banks winner at Punchestown, has a handy 11st 2lb here though was no match for stable companion Cantlow on the same course a year ago before Cantlow went on to win this race.
Urgent De Gregaine, second in the 4m 2f Pardubicka last month, would not be a surprise winner if he’s got over he exertion of that, but the money this morning was for Cantlow (4.9 on BETDAQ) and I’ll take the Enda Bolger pair, with Auvergnat (4.6) likely to have improved, still only seven.
3.35 Cheltenham (Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle) Powerful galloper On The Blind Side (4.1 BETDAQ) coped with the sharp Aintree course last time but will be in his element on this more undulating, demanding terrain.
