TOP 20 TWO-YEAR-OLDS OF 2018

The writing is on the wall for 2019. I’ve no doubt that there’s just one word, ‘Ballydoyle’, with Aidan O’Brien having charge of nine out of the top 20 two-year-olds seen so far. My ratings:

121 Ten Sovereigns (Aidan O Brien) Won the Middle Park on Saturday like a sprinter
121 Quorto (Charlie Appleby) Guineas prospect who won the National Stakes
119 Jash (Simon Crisford) Made Ten Sovereigns pull out the stops in the Middle Park
119 Skitter Scatter (Patrick Prendergast) Moyglare winner with authority
118 Just Wonderful (Aidan O’Brien) Hands and heels riding to win the Rockfel
117 Anthony Van Dyke (Aidan O’Brien) Tyros and Futurity winner; National Stakes second
116 Too Darn Hot (John Gosden) Winner of the Solario Stakes and Champagne Stakes
115 Madhmoon (Kevin Prendergast) Sire faster than Frankel; dam’s sire won the Guineas
114 Mohawk (Aidan O’Brien) National Stakes fourth who won the Royal Lodge Stakes
112 Hermosa (Aidan O’Brien) Hydrangea’s sister. Went clear at Naas yesterday
112 Kessaar (John Gosden) Powered through the mud to win the Mill Reef Stakes
111 Dandhu (David Elsworth) Not clear run when second in the Rockfel
110 Calyx (John Gosden) Not seen since impressive in the Coventry Stakes
110 Pretty Polyanna (Michael Bell) Prix Morny winner but restrained, fourth, in the Cheveley Park
109 Sydney Opera House (Aidan O’Brien) Twice beaten by Madhmoon; runner-up Royal Lodge
107 Main Edition (Mark Johnston) Favourite but only third in the Rockfel
105 Fairyland (Aidan O’Brien) Landed Lowther Stakes and Cheveley Park double
102 Sangarius (Sir Michael Stoute) Unbeaten Kingman colt making steady progress
101 Japan (Aidan O’Brien) Forced a photo-finish in the Beresford Stakes
101 Mount Everest (Aidan O’Brien) Led two out in the Beresford but not hold late challenger

LOOK TOWARDS MURPHY’S LAW

3.15 Bath Nothing breeds success like success and that’s certainly the case with Oisin Murphy this season who is on the crest of a wave (8 winners from his last 35 rides) and the multiple Group 1 winning rider is heading straight to the top.

The young jock is gaining in confidence all the time, not only on the course but also in his post-race interviews where he is one of the more interesting riders to get feedback from.

He should start the week with a winner at Bath in the shape of Gentle Look. The Dubai colt really should outclass his rivals here. He stepped up on his Doncaster debut to finish third to Kosciuszko at Sandown last time out. It’s pretty hard to quantify what that form amounts to but he looks sure to improve again today for the step up in trip and this doesn’t look a strong contest.

Craster was a modest fourth on debut at Ffos Las and is another who will improve for the step up in distance and if Skymax shows as much improvement from 2nd to 3rd start as he did from 1st to 2nd he’ll be the next Frankel !!

He was 13th of 13, beaten 58 lengths on debut at Newmarket, but then proved he was at least a racehorse by finishing third at Salisbury last time out.

5.10 Catterick Plucky Dip gave Cieren Fallon (son of KF, but technically not ‘Junior’ as different spelling) his first winner last week and is a blot on this admittedly tough handicap.

He was racing out of the handicap at Leicester and with it being an apprentice race escapes a penalty. When all the figures are crunched, he is racing off a 4lb LOWER mark here and you can then throw in the 7lb claim from Laura Pearson. The rider is only having her second start but did well on her first on a 50/1 shot at Wolverhampton that was only beaten 4 lengths.

6.45 Kempton I don’t have as much between Blue Mountain (2.26 on BETDAQ) and Red October (4.3) as the early betting suggests so will have to favour the bigger priced runner.

Red October (appropriately named) was nibbled at in the market on debut at Salisbury before chasing home Jersey Wonder which was a respectable debut and is preferred to the soft ground Chester debut second of Blue Mountain who might just struggle over the longer trip.
