112 Threat (Richard Hannon) The time was slow but Threat cruised fast and smooth in the Champagne Stakes, always controlling the far side challenge of Royal Crusade, and I join Richard Hannon’s excitement about this one more than I do about Mums Tipple. I passed on a warning that Royal Crusade was something special so was disappointed to see him sweating up so.
111 Siskin Marble Hill, Railway and Phoenix Stakes hat-trick at The Curragh, missed the National Stakes for the Middle Park.
111 Raffle Prize Queen Mary winner from Kimari and Duchess Of Cambridge from Daahyeh (106 ), will go to Newmarket for the Cheveley Park.
110 Lope Y Fernandez Beaten at Ascot and Goodwood by Pinatubo but easily beat Guildsman (105) and Fort Myers (104) in the Round Tower at the Curragh.
110 Mums Tipple A winner by ‘miles’ isn’t always worth following: short prices and the inevitable bursting of the bubble may follow, and the second and third in Tipple’s 11-lengths sales-race win at York have let the form down. The clamour put his official rating at 116. I’ve been cautious.

MORE REASONS TO BACK MORISCO
1.30 Ayr The Gold Cup meeting at Ayr is underway at 1.30pm today with a modest novice event which will hopefully bring us some ammunition for the big handicaps over the weekend which I’m looking forward to getting stuck into.
Morisco looks the answer to this one as he sets the bar at a high standard for the debutants to aim at.
Tom Dascombe has his string in fine form (6 winners from last 35) and Morisco should be able to defy his 3lb penalty for a win on the all-weather at Newcastle.
It was his latest effort though that was the real eye-catcher – a 25/1 fifth in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York and he would have been even closer if not for meeting a little interference right at the start.
Joseph O’Brien’s Vitalogy finished just ahead of him in fourth that day and went on to finish a brilliant 3rd in a Grade 1 at Woodbine.
Morisco is the clear form pick but the danger may lurk with the debutants. Mark Johnston’s Salamanca School is nicely bred and starts off over what could be his perfect trip whilst Will Sommers (Kevin Ryan) and Dreaming Blue (Richard Fahey) also have interesting newcomers.
None of the debutants though have attracted any significant early money and none have any fancy entries beyond today, suggesting the weight of evidence is that Morisco has already done more than enough to win a race of this nature.
3.30 Ayr (Doonside Cup Listed) What’s The Story will be all the rage here after his win in the Clipper Logistics Handicap at York (Class 2) but he had a tough race that day and this is another step up the ladder.
He looks very short in the betting, certainly if the official ratings are to be taken at face value and there might be better value elsewhere.
Encapsulation would be very interesting if you were willing to discount her poor effort last time out at York. But it’s a big ‘if’ and she seemingly had her limitations exposed at Listed level.
It might pay to again side with Tom Dascombe who runs Iconic Choice. Her form figures are not immediately inspiring but she has been running in Group 2/3 races in Germany and France and has just been finding life tough.
This looks much easier though and it’s worth remembering she was a very credible 7th in the 1,000 Guineas – beaten less than three lengths – and in that kind of form again will surely run a huge race at Listed level? 6.4 at the time of writing is just far too big.
4.40 Pontefract Pianissimo, owned by The Queen, should prove hard to beat.
John Gosden is fitting blinkers for the first time after her Newcastle second last time out and she is also up in trip.
It would be disappointing if she wasn’t good enough to see off chief form rival Ballylemon who has started favourite three times in five starts but failed to deliver.
