2.30 Hamilton Three sprint handicaps start Hamilton’s card on Sunday with the ground now riding good to soft.
In the 2.30 Guardia Svizzera looks a good bet. Trainer Roger Fell also has the five-year-old entered up for a race here tomorrow so is keen to get a run (or two) into him.
Conditions have certainly come right for him – he’s 2 from 2 over course and distance on good to soft ground – his wins coming off marks of 59 and 72 and he’s now slipped back to today’s mark of 61 which must put him in with a strong chance.
Bronze Beau is an even more prolific course winner here at Hamilton with six course and distance wins to his name but the 12-year-old hasn’t won for two years and was well beaten on his latest start at Musselburgh.
A bigger danger may emerge from Irish raider Rego Park Lady who should appreciate the easier underfoot conditions and is well handicapped on her best form including a course and distance in here in July.
LACCARIO TO STAKE HIS ARC CLAIM
4.10 Cologne (Preis Von Europa) The £90,000-to-the-winner Group 1 used to be a Sunday tea-party for English stables, with winners trained up to 2009 by Ian Balding, Paul Cole, Mick Channon, Guy Harwood, Mark Johnston, Sir Mark Prescott, Saeed bin Suroor and John Dunlop; 11 winners in 25 years.
But the last decade has been quiet, but today raiders have three of the first four favourites. Can they beat the home team?
Best Solution (Saeed bin Suroor) is a Godolphin globetrotter who has won in Australia, England, Dubai and Germany, and been placed in Turkey.
Aspetar (Roger Charlton) won the Grand Prix de Chantilly in June but was beaten in Coronet’s Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud later that month.
Communique (Mark Johnston) took last year’s Dubai Duty Free at Newbury, which Tabarrak won on Friday. He’s won two Group-2 races since but his German grand-prix season has been without success, beaten at the Hoppegarten in Berlin by Arc hope French King, who was winning his fourth in a row.
Then he was eased down last of nine at Baden-Baden, when third home was Laccario, who won the German Derby in July after scoring in his prep over today’s course.
It’s around honours even for three-year-olds versus older horses in this, and Laccario is taken to return to form at the main expense of Best Solution. Win this and he would then be supplemented for the Arc.
LEEP OF FAITH
5.15 Newton Abbot A competitive handicap hurdle to conclude the card at Plumpton where you need to look for the fast ground specialists.
Andaleep is speculative, given he hasn’t won on the flat or jumps in nine career starts but some of his best form has been shown on quick ground – including a very good third at Leopardstown on the level when trained by Dermot Weld.
He was well beaten on good to soft ground at Cartmel last time out but is better judged on his good fourth at Market Rasen the previous start.
The forecast 14/1 in the Racing Post tissue was always going to be optimist for a handicap debutant that could easily be well treated and he has attracted plenty of morning support on BETDAQ – it’s not inconceivable he could start favourite.
KEEP SOLO TO YOURSELF
5.30 Hamilton Sololist ran her best race on the turf on good to soft ground and comes here on the back on a win at Newcastle on the all-weather when the blinkers were on for the first time.
She has joined the Keith Dalgleish stable from William Haggas but still looks on a winning mark, given that the blinkers seem to have brought about an improvement in form.
Current BETDAQ favourite is Funny Man who is high in the weights and has 10st 1lb to shrug around today on the testing ground and up the testing finish.
He won’t lack in stamina as he was a good third over two miles at York last time out but his ‘reward’ for that effort was another 3lb hike up the weights and he looks opposable.
