⚠️ HEADS UP John Gosden’s King Of Comedy returns to a mile in a Group-2 at Newmarket on Friday, prepping for the QE11 at Ascot next month, after his fourth to Japan in the York International (1m 2f).
Later in the day Frankie Dettori will bid for a double for the punter’s godsend when Weekender takes in a Listed on his way to Champions Day.
⚠️ HEADS UP Frankie starts his Cambridgeshire meeting with Travel On on Thursday and could go on to Chelmsford that evening for Cobber Kain, who won there two weeks back from Strait Of Hormuz, who now has Oisin Murphy in the saddle for the return match.
Following Frankie is a pro-punters dream; he’s been striking at between 29 and 37% this summer, and takes few rides outside the Gosden camp. When he does so, and the race is high class, you can count on it.
A’Ali is a case in point.. 3-5 this season but 3-3 under Dettori. Looks like he’s heading straight for the Breeders Cup, after his treble of Norfolk Stakes, Robert Papin and Flying Childers but beaten in the Morny when Dettori did not ride.
⚠️ HEADS UP The Loughbrown Stakes (2m) returns to the Curragh on Saturday for the first time as a Group 3. It was given that status in its two years at Naas after its 2016 final run as a Listed, won that day by a three-year-old, future Curragh Cup winner for Jim Bolger.
Gentleman Jim can choose between two three-year-olds in the race on Saturday: Galway Festival handicap winner, Halimi, and/or Trossachs who has never been out of the first four since his debut (44111323), making life difficult for himself in handicaps now.
Twice in the last six years, Aidan O’Brien has also won the Loughbrown with a three-year-old. He has seven second-season possibles, of which Il Paradiso and South Pacific have the highest ratings.
ZIPPY ZEGALO TO BUILD ON ASCOT RUN
2.30 Beverley The Ascot form of Zegalo reads very well in the context of this race and the Roger Varian trained runner is preferred to the Mark Johnston trained Dontaskmeagain who picks up a penalty having won well on debut at Brighton.
Zegalo was weak in the market ahead of his debut at Ascot but shaped well and was staying on to good effect at the end of the seven furlong event won by Cherokee Trail who has since followed up with another win at Newbury.
The form however was let down a little when runner-up What An Angel disappointed subsequently at Sandown so we can’t get too carried away.
I’m always wary about trusting form at Brighton but I have to be respectful with Dontaskmeagain as he did look very good that day – making all to win by four and a half lengths – and looking like there was plenty more to come.
However, I’m not sure what he beat. Draw Lots (3rd) has been out again since and was beaten 22 lengths when last of nine at Catterick.
The key factor will be the 7lb penalty though and this should be enough for Zegalo to take advantage of.
5.45 Beverley The Tim Easterby express train shows no signs of stopping. 12 winners in the last 14 days, including of course Golden Apollo who gave me a 12/1 winner in the Silver Cup at Ayr last week.
Smaller fish to fry here but Brutalab can continue the winning run.
He was a course and distance winner last month and ran well enough at Thirsk last week – despite patently finding the 1m 4f trip on the long side.
He is preferred to Rosy Ryan who is up in the weights for a win over the shorter trip here last time out on softer ground than she is likely to face today. She has yet to win over this trip.
8.30 Chelmsford I made a note to follow Spice War after his win at Kempton last time out. It was his first start for his new stable and he was value for much more than the eventual neck victory.
He met trouble at the halfway stage and did well to extricate himself and go on and win and justify market support (8/1 > 5/1).
This will be tougher as he is up 4lb but he is shaping as if this longer trip will suit and he is still relatively lightly raced and could be on a decent mark.
Barca has been running over further and may well need every yard of this 1m 6f and has form closely matched with Heron who goes well over this trip.
