DAQMAN WILD CARDS TODAY AT 31.0 and 27.0 FOR PLACES: John Gosden, who yesterday reached a 3,000th winner on the Flat in Britain, provides Daqman with a bull’s-eye bet today. He also has a supernap and two wild cards at 31.0 and 27.0, concentrating on the place angle in each case.
ENGLISH RAIDERS BARRED FROM THE BIG RACE DOWN UNDER: After the shock report from Santa Anita (see yesterday’s column), Daqman starts today with the extraordinary news of English raiders barred from the Melbourne Cup in Flemington, Australia, next Tuesday. MARMELO MELBOURNE CUP SHOCK
🇦🇺 Down Under! The spotlight on racehorse injuries yesterday switched from America to Australia, with two top British hopes being barred by the stewards.
The 2018 Melbourne Cup runner-up to Cross Counter, Hughie Morrison’s Marmelo, has been ruled out of this year’s race by Racing Victoria, citing ‘incomplete fractures’ of Marmelo’s near fore and off hind cannon bones, allegedly spotted by a CT scanner.
Charlie Appleby’s Ispolini, another runner-up to Cross Counter, when second in the Dubai Gold Cup, has also been taken out of the race after a standing scan suggested ‘pre-fracture pathology’ within one of the animal’s cannon bones.
Top Newmarket vet, Dr Ian Wright, has seen the scans and claims it was ‘totally unjustifiable’ for Marmelo not to run. Trainer Hughie Morrison is ‘utterly appalled.’
He has seen the CT scan and watched Marmelo come through a sharp workout on Tuesday. There were ‘no issues,’ and Morrison points out that Marmelo had broken two track records on firm ground.
Jockey Hugh Bowman says he has had ‘the feel of a horse who is better than last year’ after strong prep work.
Ispolini, Marmelo, Southern France and Cross Counter were among the early scans – there are 30 more planned – and the one who ticks all the boxes for the test so far? Last year’s winner, Cross Counter.
My contact in the field, internationally known in veterinary science who does not want to be named, told me: ‘We’ve be just about nailed the drug problem. Now we need pre-race skeletal proof of limbs and joints.
‘The scanners cost millions so it will begin where the prizemoney is millions. It will also begin with controversy and denial. That’s normal. It’s a choice between no racing and racing redesigned for safety and welfare.’
Last word to trainer Morrison: ’We shall appeal on the grounds that they did not find an incomplete fracture; it is bone remodelling. They’re justifying the vast expense of the machine.”

Preening (6.6 offers) was runner-up in the Sceptre Stakes (Group 3) and gets 5lb from the length winner that day, Breathtaking Look.
But I believe there is a rapid late-season improver in this contest in She’s Got You at around 5-1.
She can celebrate John Gosden’s reaching the 3,000-winner mark on the Flat in Britain via El Misk at Kempton last night.
3.25 Stratford Western Miller loves Stratford (form there 121) and, though he’s got plenty of weight, will have been prepared for this, as the sole entry for Charlie Longsdon, who sponsors the race. Huge at 31.0 in the BETDAQ orange, as I write.
3.35 Lingfield Delphinia appears to have bridesmaid form (222) but the leading ladies who have beaten her recently in Group-1 fillies and mares, Anapurna and Star Catcher, are just about the best there is.
She was also runner-up in the fillies’ St Leger, the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster in September. Paying 7.5 for every 10 staked this morning.
