Come on, my son! While Aidan O’Brien fluffed his lines again yesterday, son Joseph trained the only European winner on the weekend world stage of the Santa Anita Breeders Cup.
As so often nowadays, in the age of Enable, it was a filly, Iridessa, who grabbed the headlines, her Filly and Mare Turf victory landing a second record in the States for 26-year-old Joseph.
Eight years ago, he was the youngest rider to win a Breeders Cup, when St Nicholas Abbey scored at Churchill Downs, and last night he became the youngest trainer.
But some credit must go to a generous dad. Aidan allowed Wayne Lordan to get off Just Wonderful to maintain his partnership with the flying Iridessa, and win by a neck.
And the £1,732,000-to-the-winner Breeders Cup Turf was pay-day for Aidan, with the £283,000 third prize going to his Epsom Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck, an unlucky loser behind the favourite Bricks And Mortar, after stumbling and failing to get a clear run under Ryan Moore.
The trainer said afterwards that Anthony Van Dyck would stay in training for a 2020 campaign. ‘He’s a lovely horse for next year.’
Jockey of the two-day meeting was Puerto Rican rider, Irad Ortiz (four wins), and top trainer was New Yorker Chad C Brown (three).
I’M TAKING TWO FOR GOLD
1.20 Carlisle Kim Bailey, who is celebrating Vinndication’s fine victory, will have Two For Gold fighting fit on his favourite track, where he has a 60% strike-rate with jockey David Bass.
Nigel Twiston-Davies (Muratello), who also has a solid strike-rate at Carlisle, is currently hot with 5-11, still standing. Between Bailey and ‘Twiston’, at 5.7 and 9.0 offers respectively, we should have two for gold!
2.30 Carlisle Lostintranslation, a single-figure price for the Gold Cup, has never won after a break (0-4 but 0-5 if you include his debut) and his yard is struggling for form.
Colin Tizzard has returned 3-29 in the last two weeks, and his current sequence is seriously offputting: 2330FU20000FF0P2.
Kildisdart and My Old Gold may find this trip on the short side, and another for Twiston-Davies, Count Meribel, has a good record when fresh and is a course-and-distance winner under Mark Grant, who has 75% hits at Carlisle when riding for the yard. I took BETDAQ 9.0.

2.45 Cork Follow the market! It’s 10 years now since there was a winner of this Grade-3 novice chase above 7-2 at SP.
Dallas Des Pictons, second in a handicap hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and rated 148 when lining up at Aintree, opened his steeplechase career with a lonely debut win at Gowran, when only an outsider was left to give chase after three of the five runners fell or unseated rider.
It seems to have been the tough Cheltenham track and the step up to 3m 2f in the Kim Muir that finally got Any Second Now back into the winner’s enclosure after two years drawing a blank.
Though this 2m 4f looks short for him, he was an overnight gamble with bookies from 13-2 to 9-2.
Both he and Ex Patriot have the chasing experience which could find out Dallas Des Pictons if he puts a foot wrong in his first serious test at 5.7 on BETDAQ.
Sayo bounded clear at Galway and is Paul Townend’s choice of the Willie Mullins trio, but it’s a worry for backers that his form is in and out (0340 in his next runs after a win, Flat and jumps).
HALIMI LOVES THE HEAVY
3.10 Naas (November Handicap) Eight out of 10 winners of this have been drawn 1 to 5, and champion jockey elect Donnacha O’Brien has stall 1 as a big help to negating the penalty for Stratum’s Cesarewitch win.
Stratum (stall 3) was a flop as co-favourite in this November Handicap a year ago when Mr Everest won it from the one stall but is now in gate 19.
Mr Everest didn’t get the trip in the Cesarewitch and was a well-beaten fifth, with Buildmeupbuttercup (in stall 15 today) also fading from the furlong pole. All three are trained by Willie Mullins, who also has Diamond Hill (stall 3) among his eight contenders.
Halimi (drawn 2) loved it heavy on this course when winning over shorter and Jim Bolger immediately nominated the November as his target.
I’ll take Halimi (BETDAQ 10.5) and rear-runner Buildmeupbuttercup at 9.0 as the one most likely to overcome a high stall.
RUSSIAN IN AT THE DOUBLE
3.20 Cork Grand National Recent form is important here, although last year’s winner, Out Sam, had drawn a blank in 14 races before that day and seven more since.
He’s now massively worse off with the third horse, The Gatechecker, but that one is not in such good form as last year, while ‘Sam’ has not been seen since second in the Kilmany Cup on summer ground at Perth.
I still say recent form is key. So is carrying less than 11st. Taking those who qualify in turn, Wonderoftheworld’s problem is that more showers are forecast on the soft ground.
Oscar Knight ran well when third in the Munster National on heavy three weeks back but is very hard to catch right. He’s a moderate 2-22 over fences and hasn’t won a race of any description for three years (15 straight defeats).
So can Noel Meade celebrate a weekend double? He had a great day yesterday when Road To Respect won the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal.
Now my man in the long grass is telling me that Meade has Russian Bill spot on; that he will stay the marathon trip; and that the ground has come right for him; in fact, the more rain the better.
Russian Bill won on heavy at Roscommon in September and had a prep run over hurdles at Galway only last week.
Simon Torrens (claims 7lb), who was also on a winner at Down Royal on Friday, will reduce Russian Bill’s weight to two stone below Our Sam! Yet 16.5 BETDAQ offers.
