ANOTHER BULL’S-EYE HIT AT 10.0 AND ANOTHER NAP FOR DAQMAN: It was tough going yesterday but the long and the short of it is that Daqman won again! The long-priced winner was 10.0 on BETDAQ and the short shot was his old favourite, nap-of-the-day Frodon.

CANDY WIN WAS BITTER-SWEET
Sometimes you can dig too deep. In the search for hidden treasure, you might get taken down to an old seam and find the gold has all gone, or it’s where you thought it was in the first place. A bit like Oak Island.
So it was I researched Kimberlite Candy and found that, as I put it yesterday in my Warwick Classic preview: ‘He needs to be fresh; was all geared up for the Becher Chase and missed the boat, second. You’re betting his five weeks off is enough.’
Only after the event (when he’d won!) did we learn from trainer Tom Lacey: ‘He’s never backed up before but he did this time!’ Jockey Richie McLernon echoed: ‘He wouldn’t put too runs together before but is a little bit stronger this year.’
By the look on Tom’s face when asked about the Grand National, I think we can say that yesterday was his Grand National, and he left Aintree behind, though the the great race would tempt any owner. Kimberlite Candy belongs to not just any owner but J P McManus.
It was tough for all in the mud at Warwick, and race times were slow, Candy’s slowest of all (by 39.20 seconds). He was cut five points to 20-1 with Ladbrokes and Coral, 21 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook.
The Pertemps heat is an Oak Island bluff, where you’re not expecting the winner of the Cheltenham final to have shown his strength but merely qualified.
Silver Sheen won his first handicap really well, however, and we can trust Jessica Harrington to rest him and ready him for March. He is consistently on the upgrade so a couple of pounds more wouldn’t matter.
The handicapper surely won’t be too harsh on a neck success, but he was completing a hat-trick on a very promising trajectory, and looks good to get up that final hill at Cheltenham. He was in to 16-1 with Corals.
A CAREFULLY SELECTED NAP
Not a great day of sport in the UK but Ireland comes to the rescue with two Graded races featuring horses with points to prove to some extent. Andy Dufresne will be a warm order to resume winning ways now dropped back in trip for the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle, although there was certainly no disgrace in his effort at Navan when beaten by Latest Exhibition who is quoted at 12/1 on the BETDAQ Sportsbook for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.
1.05 Punchestown (Killiney Novice Chase Grade 3) 2019 Ballymore winner City Island jumped terribly on his chase debut at Leopardstown in the race won by Melon and Chosen Mate (3rd that day) did little to advertise the form at Fairyhouse yesterday.
You should always forgive a horse one bad run but in his case it was his jumping that was so bad that even his undoubted class couldn’t compensate for. As such, Carefully Selected looks the solid alternative for the Willie Mullins team.
He’s lived up to his name with only four starts since finishing a close runner-up to Relegate in the 2018 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham and got off the mark over fences at Fairyhouse in November with a comfortable enough victory – despite a mistake two out.
Captain CJ was third to Carefully Selected that day having previously been in front of Speak Easy who runs here for Joseph O’Brien. That should a positive line towards Carefully Selected holding him, but it might not be that simple as Speak Easy was having his first start for 574 days and may come on plenty for that run so is a live danger.
1.55 Kelso Just the four runners for the class 2 handicap hurdle but if you think that makes it any easier, think again. I can give chances to all of them and nearly skipped the race but couldn’t get away from Chti Balko looking a spot of value.
The Donald McCain trained runner gets the heavy ground he relishes – 3 of his 4 career wins have come on heavy and the other one on soft and he went down fighting with a excellent second to Captain Moirette at Haydock last time out in what looked a better contest.
Market leader Elvis Mail goes well here at Kelso but has been beaten in three starts on heavy ground and needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort last time – admittedly in better company at Newbury.
2.20 Southwell A class 3 handicap with all five runners previous course and distance winners. I think the market has it wrong here and Angel Lane should be in front of Blowing Dixie whose 9lb hike in the weights looks a bridge too far.
Angel Lane won well on New Year’s Day and can still be competitive now up 6lb.
