⚠️ HEADS UP There could be trouble in store at Newbury on Wednesday in the Corbiere Handicap, the old Harwell Trophy renamed in honour of the 1973 Grand National winner.
Kim Bailey, who had a winner and second from two runners on Saturday, is planning to saddle He’s No Trouble, a son of Might Bite’s sire, Scorpion, out of a mare by Zaffaran who is the full sister to Gold Cup winner Looks Like Trouble.
⚠️ HEADS UP Daqman bids for a January hat-trick of National winners on Thursday. After Christmas In April (WON Sussex National 9-2) and Little Bruce (WON North Yorkshire National 15-8), he is hoping the 14-strong field for the Somerset National at Wincanton holds up.
⚠️ HEADS UP The Saturday scene sees the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock and the Clarence House Chase at Ascot, which could be a renewed match between the Tingle Creek one-two (separated by a neck), Defi Du Seuil and Un De Sceaux. Please: don’t even mention Altior. If you won’t, I won’t.
It would be nice to know in good ante-post time what Danny Cook will be riding in the Peter Marsh, a race he’s won three times in the last eight runnings. Two of those were for Sue Smith. Danny took the Edward Courage Cup at Warwick for Sue on Saturday, partnering Joke Dancer to an eight-lengths win.
⚠️ HEADS UP Though the next few days are bronze betting days (stake to win 10 points only), one or two races at Newbury on Wednesday and the Somerset National on Thursday could raise our game to silver (target to win 20 points) before Saturday’s gold and silver quality.
FLAMINGER A MONDAY FLING
⚠️ HEADS UP Mixed news on the Monday inspection front. Punchestown is cancelled on safety grounds with Storm Brendan set to hit.
Lingfield’s jumps card goes ahead after less overnight rain than forecast. No problems at Wolverhampton at the moment but strong winds are expected later in the afternoon. There are seven non runners at Wolverhampton at the time of writing so something to keep an eye on.
1.05 Lingfield It will be a real quagmire at Lingfield this afternoon after the meeting needed an earlier inspection to get the thumbs up.
Just the four runners go to post for this two miler and it’s very hard not to get drawn in by Flaminger who goes in search of a heavy ground hat-trick.
The Gary Moore trained mudlark scored by 18 lengths at Plumpton and four and half lengths last time out at Fontwell. He’s up another 6lb so this won’t be easy but there are question marks against his rivals which make him the percentage call on the ground.
The Gipper is probably more in the grip of the handicapper than the progressive selection. He has failed to win since a quick hurdles double in December 2018. He returned to fencing last week at Chepstow and ran well enough in second but off the same mark might again be vulnerable.
Finnegan’s Garden could be a bigger danger. He is a course and distance winner who relishes the ground and ran a big race at Sandown last time out when third in a class 2 event. Two notches down in class he should be involved and Page Fuller rides again. The negative would be that he might just need further.
Robin Des Mana was a heavy ground winner in Ireland when trained by Gordon Elliott but was a little disappointing at Leicester last time out and has something to find with Finnegan’s Garden on that form.
1.35 Lingfield Flight To Milan remains a maiden after 17 starts but a reproduction of his latest effort at Leicester should surely see a good chance of that elusive first win today?
He ran a cracker to finish a close up third to the favourite Go Steady and might well have won that day but for bungling the final fence.
He has the cheekpieces fitted for the first time today and this looks a very modest content with many of his rivals out of form.
It’s hard to see why Echo Watt is so short in the betting. After a debut bumper win on heavy ground the closest he has come over hurdles subsequently is being beaten 17 lengths in seven starts with a pulled up and unseated rider thrown in!
2.05 Lingfield A Perfect Gift can hopefully prove just that in this maiden hurdle. She made a winning start in a bumper at Uttoxeter (when well backed) on soft ground and although a little disappointing in her first two starts over hurdles comes here on the back of wind surgery.
She’s lightly raced and is preferred to the exposed pair Mickey Buckman and Enzo D’Airy who disappointed on heavy ground at Uttoxeter last time out when an even money favourite.
