DAQMAN LODGES ANOTHER NATIONAL WINNER: 6-1 OVER PRICEWISE: Daqman loves a National. He went for three big hits on Saturday: a Midlands National strike, a supernap and a bull’s-eye nap: the results were a 6-1 winner (for 14 points profit on the big race at Uttoxeter), an 11-10 supernap and 8-1 second for the bull’s-eye nap, beaten little more than a length. His 6-1 winner puts him 514 points ahead of Pricewise to 10-point level stakes. All his specialist bets are in profit despite a moderate Cheltenham.

RACING ON WITHOUT SPECTATORS

With no bookmakers on course to compete with odds on display and return a price at the ‘off’, the Press Association will produce an industry show and decide the SPs.
It has happened already, at Dundalk on Friday night, and Navan on Saturday, both took place in front of empty stands and with a deserted betting ring.
🔹 THE NEXT BIG RACES: The Irish Lincolnshire at The Curragh on Sunday, March 29, will be among those closed to the public. The Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster, usually well behind the Curragh version, is scheduled for the day before, Saturday, March 28.
THE FORTUNE COOKIES’ SUPER SIX
⚠️ HEADS UP: Out of the wreckage of Cheltenham came three Fortune Cookies covered in glory, one that had no luck and is saved for another day, one a good second, and one that flopped but who becomes a hidden horse for the future. Walk In The Mill remains our Grand National hope.
🏇 ENVOI ALLEN (Gordon Elliott) A sensational winner of the Ballymore. His future is now over fences. Runner-up Easywork, also a Fortune Cookie, will find lesser nuts to crack; easier work, in fact.
🏇 EPATANTE (Nicky Henderson) Repaid all our faith. Only the fifth mare to win a Champion Hurdle, she was our Fortune Cookie way back when she won the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day.
🏇 HARRY SENIOR (Colin Tizzard) With the stable out of form, ran no race at all in the Albert Bartlett, but Harry will be back.
🏇 HONEYSUCKLE (Henry De Bromhead) Another amazing mare, another long term to the horses-to-follow list.
🏇 THYME HILL (Philip Hobbs) Albert Bartlett fourth, when favourite despite the bad run of form by the Hobbs yard. Crowded out of it at the last.
🏇 WALK IN THE MILL remains on course for the Grand National.
THERE’S NO GLAMOUR FOR HUGHES
Champion elect is shunned. Brian Hughes, still 20 in front of Richard Johnson in the jockeys’ championship, was virtually ignored when the top rides were handed out at Cheltenham.
And current champion Johnson failed to reach the frame at the festival in nine tries, albeit an unlucky fourth on Thyme Hill.
Cheltenham is very much the amphitheatre for gladiator jockeys like Barry Geraghty and Davy Russell. But it also made a true champion of Paul Townend this week.
His Friday the Thirteenth returns of 1211 scooped up Gold Cup, Triumph Hurdle and Albert Bartlett in one day, and he’s now amassed 101 winners, despite the limited number of meetings in Ireland.
Brian Hughes’ four Cheltenham mounts included two 50-1 shots. Those with any live chance finished pulled up and 18th of 23, and were for trainers out of form: Donald McCain (16 losers in a row) and Fergal O’Brien (1-29).
There’s no glamour in being ‘a northern jockey’. There might be winners at Carlisle today, though again he is hoping that smaller stables will come to the rescue.
2.00 Carlisle La Chanteuse (Hughes) is over from one of the six counties but The Ferry Master, dropped from Graded company, has a much easier task and might accomplish it, the better for first-time tongue-tie.
3.05 Carlisle Bluefortytwo (Hughes for James Ewart) has been beaten a total of 70 lengths in his last two starts, and Lucky Flight (BETDAQ 3.25) might return to form, dropped a grade from his handicap-debut second.
TAKING RISKS FOR RICHARDS DUO
3.35 Carlisle This race might be worth a bet. At least we know the form, or should do: these veterans have run a total of 96 chases!
Bally Longford needs good ground, so I’m not keen on him. It’s three years now since Seeyouatmidnight got within 20 lengths of the winner, and he was off 686 days before tailing off last month.
Taking Risks won this race last year but is 5lb worse off with Jepeck, second beaten two and threequarter lengths. His target is the Scottish National, which he won last year.
Winning jockey Sean Quinlan keeps the ride for Nicky Richards, who is striking hot! He’s on 50% with 7-14 in the last 14 days.
Richards puts Brian Hughes up on the year younger My Old Gold. Hughes has won on that one twice but he’s up in the handicap.
Le Rocher is also 10 years old, which is a big advantage among veterans, but he’s not won in two years, and never over 3m.
The 4.8 My Old Gold and 8.1 Taking Risks on BETDAQ gave me a chance to ‘buy up’ Nicky Richards for the race.
TOASTING MURPHY AT THE DOUBLE
3.25 Market Rasen Richard Johnson has five rides at Market Rasen, including Dundrum Wood for Olly Murphy, who runs his unbeaten Monbeg Zena at Limerick.
Murphy can look forward to a Spring campaign for The Butcher Said – likes good ground – after he ran a cracker to be runner-up in the Silver Plate at Kempton yesterday, returning from wind surgery.
The trainer, who has a 20% strike rate at Market Rasen, despite a high volume of runners, won this race last year with Let’s Get At It.
Market Rasen is the track for horses who like to ‘get at it’, and Dundrum Wood made all here in the autumn.
He was in similar form at Fakenham the last day, when he and the winner (had also won previous start) came 20 lengths clear. Shade of odds against on BETDAQ as I write.
5.30 Market Rasen Murphy has an excellent record in bumpers, and Allavina is the sole ride today of Aidan Coleman, who had a book of 12 rides at Cheltenham, winning the Arkle for Henry De Bromhead on Put The Kettle On.
I might just do that after this finale, and put a drop of whiskey in a celebration cup of tea, toasting Allavina (3.0 on BETDAQ this morning).
