ATHLETIC BILBAO V REAL MADRID
1pm It’s a massive Sunday in La Liga! Barcelona dropped points in the midweek fixtures and Real Madrid were able to put four points between themselves and Barca at the top of La Liga. Real have been grinding out results since returning from lockdown, and they need to do the same today. Today is fascinating, as both Real Madrid and Barcelona are more or less between 1.7 and 1.8 – so we could easily see a gap of seven points or only one point by the end of the day! In fairness to Real, they battered Espanyol and Getafe in their last two fixtures, but only recorded 1-0 wins in both games.
Athletic Bilbao were very lucky to beat Valencia on Wednesday and you could also say they were lucky to beat Real Betis too in a very open game which finished 1-0 to Bilbao but should have finished 2-2! Real have been impressive grinding out results and getting the job done. They are creating xG numbers better than the bare results too and xG says that Bilbao are higher in the league than they should be. Real to win is a confident play here and at 1.73 they look excellent value. I expected them to be closer to 1.6.

VILLARREAL V BARCELONA
9pm This is a big game for Barcelona, but depending on the Real result earlier it could be absolutely massive. Whatever way you look at it, they have to win – either to keep the gap at four, close it to two or one if Real don’t win. Barcelona games have been very entertaining recently but it hasn’t been to their benefit. We’ve seen high expected goals, and xG couldn’t argue with 2-2 draws being a fair result against Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid. Barca need to improve at the back.
They meet an in-form Villarreal side here who have been creating some excellent chances in their recent games. They had an xG of 2.7 against Real Betis and 2.44 against Valencia. They drew 2-2 with Sevilla with an xG of 1.46 and I expect goals here. Barcelona are not a worry when it comes to creating chances, but they’ve been leaving gaps at the back and over 2.5 goals looks massive at 1.64. I felt it should be under 1.5 looking at the xG numbers for this one, and I am all over this bet. We should have an entertaining game here.
