We have a huge night of boxing from Matchroom Fight Camp on Saturday night as Katie Taylor rematches Delfine Persoon and Dillian Whyte meets Alexander Povetkin for the WBC Diamond belt. We start our preview with Taylor v Persoon. Taylor won the first bout at the MSG but the headlines afterwards all said that it was the wrong decision. The headlines this week have read “Taylor tries to avenge her own win” and it must surely have some mental effect on her, despite taking herself away from the world to focus on training.
Looking at the first fight, it was a real “how you saw it” fight which gave strong opinions on who you thought won. The reality is Taylor’s style didn’t suit Persoon and if she doesn’t change her tactics for Saturday night, then Persoon is an incredibly good value bet at 3.75. Persoon was able to hit Taylor far too much and you could say she was outworked too.
You have to feel that Taylor will change her tactics for this one. She absolutely lives and breathes the sport and will have been through the first fight thousands times. One wonders if a very long camp is a positive, as Taylor was in training for a big fight before COVID19 stopped sport. The situation around the world has been difficult for every sportsperson, and Persoon will have had her difficulties to overcome too. Both have had a win since their meeting.
Make no mistake, there is immense pressure on Taylor here. She will know how many people think she lost the first fight and she will also know how Persoon’s style didn’t suit her. You don’t become a gold medal Olympic winner without overcoming some difficult styles but you have to feel that Persoon is the value here at 3.75 with BETDAQ Sportsbook. The fight should be a closer than those odds suggest, even if Taylor comes through in the end.

DILLIAN WHYTE V ALEXANDER POVETKIN
It feels like Dillian Whyte has been waiting forever for a shot at the WBC Title, but now it seems he is getting closer than ever. If he wins this fight, he gets a shot. It’s as simple as that. He might have to wait until after Fury rematches Wilder, or fight for a vacant title if Fury vacates the title – but he will get his shot. And what about Povetkin, he has walked into an incredible position. He’s one massive punch away from a shot at the title too. He probably can’t believe his luck as he’s coming off a draw against Michael Hunter.
Both fighters had unimpressive nights on the Joshua undercard in Saudi Arabia, but in fairness to Whyte he had some problems with drug tests that were completely cleared after and he missed a lot of action towards the end of 2019. He was only given a late notice warm up fight which he came in heavy for, and simply got the job done without looking impressive. You should see a different fighter on Saturday night.
Povetkin’s form is a bigger worry. He got a draw against Michael Hunter on the same card, but it was Hunter who landed the bigger shots and Povetkin’s chin got him through. That’s not a negative in heavyweight boxing, but he doesn’t have a CV close to that of Whyte. In his last four fights, he’s won against David Price and Hughie Fury who are far from top class, lost to Joshua by KO and drawn with Hunter. He will love a tear up and come out swinging – in fairness we should have an excellent fight!
It’s hard to see past the Whyte win however, and although he is 1.28 we can’t look past the favourite here. Whyte’s form before the warm-up fight against Wach was excellent. He impressed against Parker, Chisora and Rivas. His wins weren’t without scares, and you would assume he’ll have some difficult moments here too, but his class should see him through and get him his shot at the WBC belt that he deserves. Whyte might trade bigger in-running, and that is definitely an angle to look into, but for now we like him at 1.28.
