ARSENAL V LIVERPOOL
4.30pm We have the annual curtain raiser on Saturday at Wembley as Arsenal meet Liverpool in the Community Shield! It barely feels like we’ve had a summer break, and we get back into things very quickly. Both sides will clearly use this fixture as a warm-up fixture ahead of the Premier League.
Both sides meet sides who have come up from the Championship on the first weekend with Arsenal away to Fulham and Liverpool at home to Leeds. Usually the Community Shield isn’t as far away from the start of the Premier League, with two weekends to the first round of Premier League fixtures. It’s reasonable to suggest that neither side will be 100% fully fit – and although we’ll never been able to answer this question; you’d love to know when players will get back from holidays and how much they’ve trained before this fixture.
With all this in mind, Liverpool look a little short at 1.72 from a value point of view. Arsenal have had lucky at Wembley in the past, but they have also been excellent. They have a good record here due to their FA Cup record and they enjoy playing here. I can see a closer game than odds of 1.72 suggest on Liverpool and I’m happy to have a small lay on Liverpool to start the season.
Arsenal actually managed to beat Liverpool towards the end of the Premier League season however xG said they were very lucky to do so. Arsenal did take advantage of Liverpool’s mistakes though and given this is just a glamourous friendly really; the market is a big disrespectful of Arsenal having them at 5.1. If this was a must win game, then of course Liverpool would be bang up for it but I feel they are worth laying at 1.72 in an early Community Shield. Liverpool have a massive season coming up as they look to defend their title, and this is just be a warm-up for them. Arsenal have the talent to get a result with fitness for both sides in question. I expect a closer game than odds of 1.72 suggest, but stakes should be kept small.
