Even the grey Brian The Snail, son of Zebedee, went on a runaway ride to victory at 11-1 yesterday, leading from halfway in the sprint at Newcastle. Daqman also landed his nap to give himself two winners a day for the fourth consecutive day, taking his tally since Saturday to more than 268 points profit.

JUMP TO AVOID 133 TWO-YEAR-OLDS! Trying to continue the winning sequence today means avoiding the Flat turf meetings, which are playgrounds for two-year-olds, 133 of them! Not one decent betting race to be found. So Daqman has had to switch to the Jumps with selections from Hereford and Fontwell.
FOURTEEN RACES ARE JUST JUVENILE!
Some things need to be said. Usually when punters say them, nothing happens. But in these days of closed-door racing, the faithful watching from home may just become more important to the industry, and more informed, than the crowds that used to flock to the tracks in purely party mood.
The success of exchange betting shows a groundswell for something closer to a level playing-field in the odds with a flexible market that the discerning punter can create himself and even profit by.
The role of educator must be the Press. So I was delighted to see in the Racing Post, Mark Holder criticising the attitude to soft going and Patrick Veitch slamming the ‘bloated fixture list.’
There is such a relentless and monotonous flow of low-class racing and cards put on for the sake of cheap horses or the preparation of juveniles and maidens that, as Veitch says, ‘keeping abreast of each day’s racing is a Herculean task, with the inevitable consequence that you don’t even try most of the time?’
Yours truly, Daqman, has to face the deluge daily and swim to the nearest island of quality in the mass of cards, hoping to find a race worth analysis that will produce a bet or two.
Veitch’s piece coincides with a mass of races for two-year-olds only today which takes up five events on the Kempton card (five out of nine) and ALL bar one race (six out of seven) at Newmarket. Three consecutive at Gowran Park, too. That’s a total of 14, absolutely juvenile!
BUCKING THE TREND
⭕ 2.25 Hereford I wouldn’t be in a huge hurry to back Ziggy Rose at likely odds-on. It’s not just the form figures of P/22422 that are concerning but the fact she has a very serious rival on her hands in the shape of Young Buck who hails from the Paul Nicholls stable who start the day on a hat-trick.
An Irish point winner last year, Young Buck made his rules debut at Exeter and showed plenty of promise when finishing third to Getaround and The Jitterbug. Getaround went on to finish fourth in the Grade 2 Persian War at Chepstow and The Jitterbug hasn’t reappeared. Given Nicholls is in better form now and the likely improvement from Young Buck, I think the BETDAQ betting exchange market has these two the wrong way round.
Ziggy Rose ran her best race to date when second to Cill Anna (another Nicholls trained) in a Listed mares novices hurdle at Doncaster in February which was fair enough form but it did come on heavy ground compared to the expected good at Hereford today. Whilst Listed in name, mares divisions can often be weak and the third from the race Aimee De Sivola did little to advertise the form next time out at Uttoxeter when beaten 44 lengths in a handicap.
90 RUNNERS WITH NO FORM FIGURES
⚠️ HEADS UP: Of 133 two-year-olds running in 14 races at today’s Flat meetings, just 14 have winning form (an average of one per race!) and 29 otherwise placed, so 90 are newcomers or with no form at all.
⭕ 3.20 Newmarket This is the only HQ race today that’s not for two-year-olds. It’s a race for fillies which should be won on breeding.
With two chances is owner Lady Caroline Bamford, wife of the industrialist, brand leader in her own right and charity worker extraordinary.
I hope she will play the BETDAQ offers and so reveal to us the relative strength behind her pair, Sun Bear (John Gosden) and Sunset Kiss (Michael Bell). Otherwise we have to back both.
Sun Bear is a Dubawi out of an Irish Oaks winning sister to King George winner Nathaniel. Sunset Kiss is a Kingman out of a Sadlers Wells mare who is full sister to 1,000 Guineas winner, Yesterday.
At this morning’s offers in a BETDAQ orange only 106% overround, I could get 6.5 Sunset Kiss and 7.4 Sun Bear.
⭕ 3.55 Newmarket I wrote up Royal Touch before his debut a fortnight back, and, finishing second, he looked as though the education at Nottingham that day had done him good.
I can’t back him at likely long odds-on, when the stable has two in the race and the top yard in England, John Gosden’s, also runs two.
SEASIDE LOOKS FAIR BET
⭕ 4.55 Fontwell Seaside Girl let her supporters down when unseating rider at the third when favourite at Wincanton last time out.
Hopefully that was just a blip as she had jumped well, in the main, over course and distance when winning here in August. She looks to have improved for wind surgery and remains progressive with not too many miles on the clock.
With 1 win from 35 races Kalaskadesemilley is one that you can afford to miss. His course and second last time out reads well enough but the 5lb rise looks very harsh indeed.
