BRIGHTON V NEWCASTLE

8pm As it’s an FA Cup Quarter Final weekend, we only have one Premier League game to enjoy on Saturday but what a fixture it is! We can also enjoy 0% Commission on all football bets today on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. With Manchester City already having nearly two hands on the title, this is probably one of the biggest games in the Premier League at the moment. We might see bigger games in the race for a Top Four finish in the final fixtures, but right now this is as big as they come. With Fulham enjoying a lot of success recently, these two sides have come under immense pressure and the loser, if there is one, is in a very difficult position.

Both sides have been fighting hard in recent weeks. Newcastle have managed three draws, although they would have liked to beat West Brom, they have kept themselves ahead of Fulham and it’s only now that Fulham are within touching distance. Brighton finally got three points against Southampton last weekend, coming out on top in a very close game. They might not have deserved to win that with xG saying a draw was a fair result, but they did deserve to win at some stage. They have been playing their best football of the season lately and have been extremely unlucky.

Brighton will be asking themselves why they are where they are in the table, but the results just haven’t gone their way. Their performances have been immense. They created an xG of 2.44 in a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa, 3.03 in a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace while only conceding 0.27, 3.28 in a 1-0 loss against West Brom and then lost a very close game with Leicester. They deserve to get a bit of luck. The xG table puts them in 5th, yet here they are in a relegation battle.

That win last weekend put Brighton a point ahead of Newcastle, but with Fulham getting very close we all know this could decide who goes down. I know Brighton have been very unlucky lately, but their performances really stand out and I can only see one winner tonight. I’m very happy to take the 1.71 on Brighton as they are a much better side than Newcastle. I take on board that they have played well and lost, but if they keep playing like they have been they will start banging in goals for fun soon. Newcastle don’t create enough to cope with this Brighton side, and I can’t ignore the 1.71.

MATCH STATS

  • Brighton are unbeaten in all seven of their Premier League meetings with Newcastle (W3 D4) – only against West Ham have they played as many in the competition without ever suffering defeat.
  • Newcastle have faced Brighton more often without victory than they have any other side in the Premier League (7 – D4 L3). The Magpies have only scored one goal in their seven games against the Seagulls.
  • Brighton won the reverse fixture against Newcastle 3-0 at St James’ Park, with those three goals accounting for 43% (3/7) of the total goals scored in this fixture in the Premier League (7 games).
  • Brighton are looking to secure their first league double over Newcastle since the 1978-79 campaign in the second tier.
  • Brighton earned their first win in six Premier League games at Southampton last time out. However, at home the Seagulls have picked up just one victory in their last 18 Premier League matches (D8 L9), beating Spurs 1-0 in January.
  • Since the turn of the year, only Southampton (7) have picked up fewer points in the Premier League than Newcastle (9), with the Magpies losing eight of their 13 games so far this year (W3 D2).
  • 70% of Brighton’s Premier League victories have been by a one goal margin (23/33). Of teams with at least 30 wins in the competition, only Norwich City and Wigan Athletic (both 71%) have won a higher share by a single goal.
  • Only Sheffield United (6) have scored fewer first half goals in the Premier League than Newcastle this season (9), while the Magpies have the lowest ratio of goals scored in the opening 45 minutes this term (32% – 9/28).
  • Only Neal Maupay (7) has scored more Premier League goals for Brighton this season than centre-back Lewis Dunk (4). This is Dunk’s best goalscoring season in the Premier League, while in all divisions he’s only ever scored more in 2014-15 (5).
  • Newcastle’s last two Premier League goals have been scored by Jamaal Lascelles. The defender has scored two in his last three Premier League appearances, as many as in his previous 98 in the competition.
