It’s a brave-man’s game. To back novice chasers, I mean. But so far, our Fortune Cookies have hit on two of the best, if the ratings are to be believed.
They are Edwardstone, winner of the Henry V111 Chase at Sandown at the weekend, and Bravemansgame, who took the Graduation Chase at Haydock.
Ahoy Senor beat Bravemansgame seven lengths over hurdles in the Spring when he made all at Aintree, and he might have beaten Fiddlerontheroof over fences at Carlisle in October but for sprawling and unseating two out. Daqman thinks he is an Aintree horse. Here are the current ninepins:

LET’S GET DOWN TO EARTH
⭕ 1.30 Wincanton Richard Bandey, who trains in Hampshire, has had two winners and two seconds from six supported horses in the last 10 days, both winners ridden by Harry Bannister.
Today he starts out a newcomer to the yard, Oakley, who was overfaced by Philip Hobbs and won two hurdles only, though not disgraced attempting three Grade-3 events, including at Cheltenham.
In among them, 14 months back, he was placed at today’s level off 6lb higher. I was preparing for the each-way bet of the week until – oh no! – just seven runners, so one place lost already.
I decided to try to ‘win the race’ (stake on more than one horse for a small profit). Taking 5.7 on BETDAQ win only, I switched the place stake to have another bet in the race.
For what makes the whole event bristle with irony is that Philip Hobbs has one of the improvers, the three-years-younger Earth Company being hoisted into handicaps after a promising third here at Wincanton and an easy strike at Taunton. Brief Times is another of the same age with potential.

⭕ 2.30 Wincanton Another who’s switched stables, Young O’Leary, goes for this chase after being given a hurdles outing by new trainer, Tim Vaughan.
Venetia Williams (currently 5-12 still standing) is having a great run and her 2m winner, Jack Valentine, who has fluffed his lines over further so far, gets a third-time-lucky chance at 2m 4f here, as demanded by his breeding.
Yet another to have changed stables is Iron Mike, left with too much to do on his chasing debut here at Wincanton in November.
Locally-based course winner White Moon has crashed 17lb in two years but I can’t get enthusiastic: he’s never been nearer than 21 lengths to the winner, despite wind surgery, in the last year.
White Moon’s chase form at Wincanton is FP0 and, if this is a coup, you’ve missed the price; he’s favourite already. Oh and Peur De Rien has no reason to fear nothing!

TEAR AWAY FOR A REPEAT
⭕ 2.45 Catterick Sam Allwood’s Shropshire yard suddenly hit form on Friday with his first winner of the season plus a second from two runners still standing.
It’s his time of year, as we know from Out On The Tear, who comfortably won this race last season. I took 2.36 in the BETDAQ orange.
Was Coolkill coughing after he pulled up on his chasing debut or was he gurgling; a second lot of wind surgery suggests we can’t back him until it’s cleared up.
Relkadam is down to his winning mark of earlier in the year and won at Catterick last season. Poor strike rate and the stable is currently 0-17.
Full Of Surprises is not (full of surprises)! The J P McManus mare has scored since winning her maiden on debut in 2019, always a bad sign.
