BRILLIANT BID DOWN IN CLASS
⭕ 3.20 Ayr (1m 2f Listed) Paul Mulrennan, who has established a solid reputation, riding mainly in the North, bids for his 100th winner at Ayr today in only four years.
He rides in earlier races but has an eye-catching booking in this fillies and mares Listed for Jessica Harrington, who drops Irish raider The Blue Brilliant back from failed attempts at 1m 4f.
The filly won back-to-back over 10 and 11 furlongs last Spring and summer, and ran her best yet when pipped on the post in a Deauville Group 3 by Penja, who next time out was herself just nosed out of a Group 2.
The Blue Brilliant was rated 105 at today’s trip and, if coaxed back to her best, has between 7lb and 27lb on this field, barring the grey mare, Angel Power.
Angel Power is officially 2lb clear today but trainer Roger Varian continues in the doldrums (1-29) and you have to go back to October, 2020, to find her last winning form in England.
This is the second time City And Suburban runner-up Achelois has tried to step up to Listed level; in the first bid for black type, she finished fourth in a big field at Doncaster at the last meeting of the 2021 season.
With her stable in incredible form (William Haggas 42% strike rate), My Astra, two out of two last summer, must be a big danger to all, though she has been beaten favourite the last twice when placed at Listed level, unlucky half-length third in the Snowdrop at Kempton run at a false pace.
