THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Wednesday’s Big Bash match between SYDNEY SIXERS v MELBOURNE RENEGADES with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The Big Bash rolls onto Sydney on Wednesday morning as the Sydney Sixers take on the Melbourne Renegades on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. The Sydney Sixers got off to a poor start in the tournament this year with two losses from their opening two games, but after reaching the last three finals (and winning two of them), they were never going to be on that losing run for long. They have now put two wins together either side of Christmas – the win on Boxing Day was a nervy affair too but a nice confidence boost.
The Sydney Sixers are used to winning and getting to the playoffs, but Melbourne Renegades aren’t. They have finished bottom of the table for three years now, but after putting together three wins from their opening three games it looks like that will change this season. They did lose on Boxing Day however, and you have to consider that two of their three wins came against Brisbane Heat who are usually down the bottom of the table with the Renegades.
The Sydney Sixers come into this game as the clear favourites, probably because the market doesn’t trust the “new” Melbourne Renegades! An interesting game awaits. If the Renegades can win, it will show everyone they are here to stay this season.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
As I said it my preview before Christmas, we haven’t had too much Big Bash cricket because of Covid19. We went into the first couple of games not fully knowing what type of conditions to expect. You have past years as a guide, but you want to confirm. From the opening two games here I wouldn’t be fully set on a high scoring game, but it is more likely than not in my opinion. We saw first inning scores of 137/6 (off only 14 overs) and 150/5. That 150/5 was chased down by the Sixers, but it was reasonably nervy at times despite them only losing three wickets. In truth they were always in control of the game, but they just didn’t boss the game. I would bat first if I won the toss and make best use of good batting conditions.
RECOMMENDED BET:
As I said above, the jury is definitely out on Melbourne Renegades because two of their three wins came against Brisbane Heat. However, I do feel the odds are too far apart here. I fully expect a closer game than the odds suggest – the 1.66 on Sydney Sixers is much too short. I know they have bounced back well from a poor start, but their batting line-up is still there to be taken on – they are top heavy, and need runs from the top order. That will likely decide the game, and I’m happy to have a small value bet on the Renegades at 2.4. Their batting has fired so far – the Hobart game was very low scoring I know, but that doesn’t excuse the fact they should have chased 122 but apart from that they are much improved.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
Always confirm the batting conditions in the opening three overs, but I would expect the batters to be on top here over the bowlers. That being said, I would say on the Sydney Sixers once they lost four/five wickets as their lower order looks worth taking on. The Renegades bowling has been good too – much better than previous years – and the market possibly hasn’t adjusted to that yet. In an ideal world, the Renegades won bat first and go well, and then we could support their bowling later after getting a good trade from their batting.
