NAVAN TOP OF THE CLASS: Daqman pushes the boat out for Irish racing today and navigates top-class racing at Navan, where he has a bull’s-eye bet, but he saves his nap for a big hit at Exeter.
BLAZING THREE-WAY BATTLE
⭕ 2.40 Navan (Boyne Hurdle) They all said Tiger Roll couldn’t win this – wouldn’t want to – on his way to taking the Cheltenham cross–country and the Grand National.
The year is 2019 and Tiger Roll defies the logic and wins this Grade-1 hurdle for Gordon Elliott at 25-1, then takes the cross-country for the second year running; then the National for the second year running.
Trainers love to find a pattern for success and who can blame them for being creatures of habit; aren’t we all. Who among punters is not to blame if he fails to follow them!
But it’s always easy until you are face to face with your cursor hovering over the BETDAQ offers with your hard-earned on the line.
So should you follow the same Gordon Elliott plan as it unfolds again, starting today with Delta Work in this Boyne Hurdle?
Delta Work won the same Cheltenham cross-country last March (beating Tiger Roll), then ran third in the Grand National.
This season he’s won a banks race at Punchestown and was third last month in the cross-country at Cheltenham which is a regular CD test for the Festival.
For some reason I can’t credit, the handicapper has lopped 5lb from his rating; Gigginstown, who carped about the way Tiger Roll was treated, must be delighted (but what will the special Aintree handicap do to him?)
It’s nearly five years since Delta Work won the Pertemps Hurdle Final at Cheltenham, then was beaten a neck for the novice-hurdle title at the Punchestown festival on April 25, 2018, some 19 days after Tiger Roll had won his first National.
Will he treat the Boyne field with disdain as did Tiger Roll? Can he hold his form at speed (the going is yielding) against the younger generation of Saint Sam and Blazing Khal, who share the target of Stayers Hurdle?
Blazing Khal was a Daqman FORTUNE COOKIE of 2020-21, landing a hat-trick including the Ballymore. This is his first senior race, 428 days on.
And what a race it is, with so much at stake for Cheltenham and Aintree.
LAYS LOGIC: It’s Saint Sam’s big test of a trip, stepping up from his all-the-way win at Punchestown in December; will he settle; show more fluency? His 2.56 on BETDAQ looks very short, though word is that Blazing Khal needs the race. So it all adds up to Delta Work.

THE IRISH JUMPING MISSION
⭕ 3.40 Navan (Ten Up Novice Chase) When I want to remember the history of Irish Jumps racing, I think of Gold Cup winner Ten Up and his connections.
Owner Anne Duchess Of Westminster (Arkle), trainer Jim Dreaper, the second coming at Greenogue (Carvill’s Hill) and jockey Tommy Carberry (L’Escargot).
Tom Dreaper trained Arkle, Pat Taaffe rode him, and they all had me hooked, until – like Vincent O’Brien – I turned to the Flat.
I’ve still missed many a great name out in my cameo of Irish giants. So, please, let’s not talk of the dominance of the Irish in steeplechasing; they own it.
The English sport needs a Fulke Walwyn, David Nicholson, Fred Rimell, Fred Winter line of defence. Only Paul Nicholls is hard-wired that way, as the roving centre-half; the spirit of the man is legend.
Mahler Mission (strong support to 3.0) had the ideal prep for the Ten Up race this year; he made virtually all here at Navan the last day.
Soft-heavy horse Must be Obeyed just beat him at Punchestown but Mahler Mission pecked on landing at the last and it’s drying ground today. ‘Obeyed’ drifted to 11.0 on BETDAQ this morning so, again, plenty of room to maneouvre in our magnificent market place, made by you.
Churchstonewarrior is another rising novice, but he doesn’t always rise over his fences in the way I’d like, and Glengouly has to bounce back from a fall at Punchestown.
Another excellent race with quality runners and a decent-sized field, which has been so lacking in England. You can’t build a back row and go forward, if you don’t have competition or you spread it too thinly.
HOBBS DOUBLE TEMPTATION
⭕ 4.10 Navan Sweet Will, brother to a sprinter and half-brother to a miler (!), booked his Cheltenham Festival hurdles ticket on the course in November by beating a subsequent 11-lengths Haydock scorer in a 2m 5f hurdle. But he wasn’t all that fluent over fences the last day, Temptationinmilan gets a lump of weight from the other front-runners in the betting, and is preferred to the talking horse of the day, History of Fashion, who has been enormous prices lately after pulling up three times in a row.

⭕ 4.30 Exeter The day’s place bet must be Run To Milan (a coincidence double with Temptationinmilan), who has Exeter form of 21431321, but yet again we face a class-2 race with one horse fewer than eight runners.
Musical Slave (BETDAQ 3.9) won third time back last year and this is third time this; only 2lb higher than for back–to-back Spring strikes at Haydock and Sandown last year.
Philip Hobbs returned to form big time with zenzational Zanza yesterday, and I shall be shouting for Tom O’Brien to pull off the double of the weekend.
