THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Saturday’s IPL clash between Lucknow Super Giants v Delhi Capitals with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The IPL is here, and Saturday see’s our first double header on BETDAQ Betting Exchange! We have four fixtures in total this weekend after the tournament kicks off on Friday, and it’s fair to say we start with a bang! I’m happy to focus on Lucknow Super Giants against Delhi Capitals on Saturday afternoon – this should be a high quality game between two sides who had decent seasons in 2022. Lucknow Super Giants finished in second while Delhi Capitals managed fifth – a slightly disappointing finish in fairness after doing so well in the UAE when the tournament couldn’t be held in India because of Covid19.
I felt last season that their squad was more suited to conditions in the UAE rather than India, and it will be interesting to see how Delhi perform this time around. Last season was the first time they missed the playoffs since 2018. What could be massive for this fixture is that the South African players are arriving late to the IPL. They have must win ODI games against the Netherlands in the ODI Super League, so Cricket South Africa haven’t released their players. That puts a big dent in the Delhi bowling with Nortje and Ngidi out. Pant is also injured for Delhi meaning they need a new wicketkeeper, and David Warner will lead the side.
Lucknow Super Giants will also miss Quinton de Kock, who arrives late as well from South Africa. They did spend a lot of money on Nicholas Poonan too, so maybe that’s not such a big blow. The big question is how will the domestic players perform for Lucknow, because they do look a little light on paper outside of KL Rahul to open the batting. Lucknow had success with a lot of all-rounders last season, but will teams have their measure to those plans now? We should have a very interesting game here!
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
There’s a new rule at the IPL this season which allows teams to name their side after the toss. That will be good news for the captains here because we don’t have much ground history to go off at Lucknow. We didn’t see an IPL game here last season, and there is limited International cricket too. India played Sri Lanka in a T20 here in 2022, scoring 199/2 and winning by 62 runs. Then they played New Zealand here in January – they kept New Zealand down to 99/8 but they made very hard work for chasing it – only winning with one ball left! Fair to say we’ll have to keep an open mind here.
RECOMMENDED BET:
I would definitely be keen to keep stakes low here – it is the first game for both sides, and conditions are unknown. Last season Lucknow performed very well, they were solid and had a lot of success with all-rounders as I said above. I feel they won’t have the same success this time around as teams know what to expect from them. However, losing the South African bowlers is a massive blow for Delhi at the start of the tournament, and for the time being that leaves Lucknow with the stronger squad here. I wouldn’t judge Delhi too hardly on their performance here because they will improve, but it’s Lucknow for me. I was actually surprised to see Lucknow trading 2.0 – I felt they would be the odds on favourites considering the bowling issues for Delhi.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
As I said above, we don’t have a huge data set for this ground so it’s very difficult to form an in-running strategy. It will be easier to trade at this ground as the tournament goes on and we get to know conditions better. This game is all about protecting your bank for the long-run, it is a two month tournament after all! If we got good batting conditions, and we have had a range of scores in International cricket here so you’ll need to confirm conditions, I would take on the Delhi bowling as they are missing their South African bowlers.
