It’s quite unique to have both legs at the same ground! Both sides have been under-par in Serie A this season, but they have a big battle for top four spots at the moment so they can’t afford to ease off things domestically. The atmosphere here should be absolutely incredible, and this is what the Champions League is all about.
We have an open market heading into the first leg. Inter Milan are currently the favourites at 2.52, with AC Milan 3.3 and the draw is 3.2 at the time of writing. Both sides recorded massive wins in the Serie A top four battle at the weekend with AC Milan beating Lazio and Inter Milan beating Roma – it was a real top four battle at the weekend because Juventus beat Atalanta too. The results left Inter Milan back in the top four with AC Milan sitting fifth just two points behind. They were hammer blows for Atalanta and Roma at the weekend, and AC Milan will have their eye on catching Lazio now too. It’s been a big shake up since Juventus had their 15 point deduction overturned.
It’s easy to understand why Inter are the favourites here. They have been playing the better football compared to AC Milan this season, and they will be a very popular choice to get through the tie. In Serie A, Inter have been creating an average xG of 1.8 and only conceding 0.9 while AC Milan create marginally less at 1.7 and concede marginally more at 1.1. Really fine numbers, but at the moment there’s no question who is playing the better football. Inter have been creating chances for fun lately while AC Milan have been struggling.
Inter have finished recent games with xG figures like 3.18 and 3.46, and then they went through hat exceptionally unlucky period in Serie A as well. They created an xG of 2.71 but loss 1-0 to Fiorentina, created over double what they conceded but loss to Juventus by the same score line, and finished the 2-1 loss to Spezia with an xG of 3.51! AC Milan have been involved in a lot of draws recently, but they haven’t been creating enough to win games. You could also say they were lucky to get by Napoli to reach this stage, but then Napoli just didn’t take their chances.
We could easily have a classic Italian cagey first leg here too. Under 2.5 goals will be a popular bet at 1.7 but we tend to see fireworks between the sides. Inter won the last meeting 1-0 in February, but Over 2.5 goals has collected in six of the last eight meetings. That stat would just put me off the Unders at 1.7, but given it’s a first leg I couldn’t put anyone off it. I feel Inter have been the classy side this season, and they definitely create more and come into the game in good form. The 2.52 is worth backing in my opinion.
