PREVIEW
Later today clay court specialist David Ferrer takes on Andy Murray in the quarter finals of the French Open.
Clay is Murray’s worst surface and he has still yet to win a tournament on the slippery flooring even though he has 22 career titles. Murray has reached the quarter finals of both his previous clay tournaments this season, losing on both occasions to Richard Gasquet and Milos Raonic. Unfortunately for Murray neither of these players are in the same class as Ferrer, who is a machine on the ‘French dirt’.
Ferrer has won three titles already this season, two of those wins coming on his much loved surface. His skill on clay is further demonstrated by eight of his career titles coming on the ‘red carpet’, only winning six on the other surfaces accumulatively.
Another problem for Murray is his head-to-head record against Ferrer. Murray has won five of the encounters, however, three of Ferrer’s four wins are on clay and Murray has never beaten the powerful Spaniard on his home surface. Ferrer has been on ferocious form in Paris so far, only losing 25 games in his previous four matches, and he is yet to lose a set. Compare this to Murray who has lost two sets and 47 games on his route to the last eight.
Away from the clay surface, Ferrer is leading Murray on form this season with a 33 and seven record compared to Murray who has also lost seven times this season but only has 22 wins. Ferrer has continued that run at Goland Garros and I fancy him to stop Murray progressing any further. The Scot has enough to take a set, but the best bet is backing Ferrer in four at 2.46 on BETDAQ.
RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
