PREVIEW
While Poland seemed to crumble under the weight of expectation and pressure of playing at home as they limped to a 1-1 draw against a dogged Greece side in Friday’s opener, Russia confirmed their reputation as dark horses for Euro 2012 with a comprehensive 4-1 win over the Czech Republic.

That victory has put Russia in pole position to qualify from Group A and Poland know a defeat will all but see them crash out of the tournament.

Poland’s task has not been aided as their first-choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny will sit out the game with a suspension after being red-carded against the Greeks. Przemysław Tytoń performed a minor miracle to save the Greek penalty with his first touch but with just six international caps to his name, his lack of big-game experience will do him no favours. In the prolific Robert Lewandowski the Poles have a striker capable of causing a stir but the lack of service to him on Friday was a concern.

Confidence in the Russian camp will certainly not be lacking after Alan Dzagoev’s brace helped give Dick Advocaat’s side the best possible start to the tournament. With the artful Andrey Arshavin looking more like the player that wowed the footballing world in this tournament four years ago, backed up by a solid defensive unit, Russia will be a hard team for anyone.

Any tournament always loses a little of its spark when the hosts depart early but it’s hard to see Poland finding the required improvement to shock the rampant Russians and the latter can be confidently backed to put Poland on the brink of a home exit.
