PREVIEW
The ‘Group of Death’ looked deadly enough with just the fancied trio of the Netherlands, Portugal and Germany before Denmark sprung a surprise beating the Dutch 1-0 in the Group B opener.
Despite mustering 29 goal attempts Bert van Marwijk’s men were frustrated by a firm Danish defence and some lax finishing on their part. Michael Krohn-Dehli’s well-taken first-half strike has given Denmark the belief that they can make it out of the group ahead of some of their more illustrious rivals and means the Netherlands must get something out of today’s game.
But the ‘Orange Army’ wouldn’t be the first top team to slip up in their opening game and we can surely expect an improved showing against their historic rivals. The Dutch really should have scored against Denmark and assuming Robin van Persie and co don’t squander their chances again then we should expect them to score.
Germany began their campaign in typically determined style seeing off the challenge of Portugal 1-0 with Mario Gomez translating his excellent domestic goalscoring form to the international stage. His brilliant header was enough to see off a talented Portuguese outfit who must surely bemoan not having a top-class striker of their own.
They are second-favourites for a reason and will relish the opportunity to knock out their neighbours. The midfield creativity provided by Mesut Özil and the firepower from proven international performers like Gomez, Lucas Podolski and Thomas Muller means we should expect goals in what should be an entertaining clash.
