LOOKING FOR A WEEK OF WINNERS: Daqman bets at Deauville and Goodwood today, looking for the strike that will give him winners for seven days running. Don’t miss his Bank Holiday selections tomorrow for the Amateurs’ Derby at Epsom and Ripon’s Champion Two-Year-olds Trophy.

THE GREAT DETTORI DOUBLE

IT’S Absurde. For a young rider to win two ace races back to back, flat out in fast time, both by less than a length, would make headlines of super fitness and genius, but for old-man Frankie Dettori to retire from York with such a double is absurd.

So it was that a French horse won the Ebor, trained by an Irishman and ridden by an Italian, both legends in their time.

Rider of the second, Dettori’s ‘great mate’ Rab Havlin, pipped half-a-length on Sweet William, declared: ‘It would be him, wouldn’t it!’

And Absurde’s trainer, Willie Mullins, also a veteran, when praised by the Press turned on them and declared: ‘It was Dettori. Frankie was just amazing.’

York, the ‘Ascot of the North,’ outdid the royal show again. One Dettori winner, Absurde, followed another – his favourite horse, Kinross – with one leap from the saddle, then another. Time stood still.

Afterwards, Frankie asked Willie for the ride on Absurde in the Melbourne Cup, for which he receives a free ticket from his Ebor victory. ‘I’ll have a word with the owners,’ said Willie, as you would on any ordinary day.

GARRUS THE DEAUVILLE NAP

⭕ 1.33 Deauville: Group-3 winner at Deauville last summer Garrus – in fact, a dual CD winner – can land the nap for Charles Hills at the expense of Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Mill Stream, a Listed winner here earlier in the month but receiving only 5lb as the weight-for-age changes.

⭕ 2.50 Deauville Simon and Ed Crisford, who stole the Deauville headlines last weekend when Vandeek won the Morny, could take this Group-3 mile with Poker Face, who benefitted from the drop back to a mile the last day.

George Boughey’s Raadobarg was beaten a length by the selection at Pontefract but the needle’s stuck since he switched from Johnny Murtagh with form figures of 3303.

COLE TEAM CAN HAVE A BALL

⭕ 4.10 and 4.45 Goodwood: There’s another champion trainer spreading his wares across three English and French tracks today.

Paul Cole attended teacher-training college in his youth but changed careers and won the English and Irish Derbys in 1991 aged 50, the year of his championship.

He sent his Classic winner, Generous, out from Whatcombe, where Arthur Budgett had trained the 1969 and 1973 Epsom Derby winners with Blakeney and Morston and was himself champion trainer in 1969.

The Cole outfit, now a father-and-son partnership of Paul and Oliver Cole, have Many A Star in the 2.50 at Goodwood, plus their Cambridgeshire hope, Thunder Ball in the 4.45, after Jack Darcy runs as a Betdaq Betting Exchange 8.7 shot in the Grand Prix de Deauville (3.25) behind Assistent.

Paul won this 2.25 race at Goodwood in 2018, ridden by a 3lb claimer name of Rossa Ryan, who – now a top flight jockey- this year has a 31% strike rate for Paul and Oliver.

But Ryan switches to The Gatekeeper, while Jason Watson rides Many A Star, only his second time in the saddle for the Coles, so I’m a bit put off and would rather back Thunder Ball (BETDAQ 6.5)

His second season is set to be a repeat of his first: a quiet start at Newmarket then, if last year is any guide, a quick leap forward to victory second time of asking.

Cherry (4.10) can give Rossa Ryan his winner. We know she must have gone really well though beaten at Doncaster, now that we’ve seen the winner, Sea Theme, take a Listed at the York meeting
