This year, we were on Chaldean in the English 2,000 but glad to dump him after he beat only a 91-rated into second at Newmarket, and he failed twice after at 13-8 and 7-10, favourite both times.
DERBY DOWNERS: Desert Crown, the 2022 Epsom Derby winner, had not been seen since when beaten half a length by Hukum at Sandown in May. Now he’s gone missing again.
So has the form of Sir Michael Stoute’s stable; currently 1-13, with Nostrum’s failure as hot favourite last week suggesting ‘something’s wrong’ at Freemason Lodge.
Westover, said to have been unlucky at Epsom last year, ran away with the Irish Derby, but was hammered 18 lengths in the King George and has won just the once since the Curragh, in a small field at Saint-Cloud.
This year we’ve managed to squeeze the big two Derby wins out of Auguste Rodin but he let us down badly in the King George. Would you back Auguste Rodin, Chaldean or Desert Crown ever again?

THE CLASSIC GENERATION
⭕ 3.40 Newbury Classic can strike a blow for the three-year-olds in this class 3 handicap. The Richard Hannon trained runner lost nothing in defeat here last time out over seven furlongs- far from it – he could easily have been considered an unlucky loser.
He was repeatedly denied a clear run in the closing stages only for him to be doing his best work near the end and gave every indication the extra furlong here will be right up his street. Back at class 3 level and off the same mark he could prove very hard to beat and get back to the winning form he had shown previously at Sandown where also staying on well at the end of seven furlongs.
Crack Shot is going back in distance after disappointing at Goodwood last time out – he might just be a little high in the handicap though after his early career win at Hamilton which was only at class 5 level.
The one I fear the most is Sea Eagle who has been nibbled at in the early Betdaq Betting Exchange market. Trained by William Haggas, he remains unexposed and looks capable of more than he showed on handicap debut at Goodwood last time out.
I’M ON THE TRAIL
⭕ 4.00 Ripon Origintrail looks very much the percentage call here at a track she clearly loves.
She knocked up back to back wins at Chester and over course and distance here last season and gave a strong indication of a return to that kind of form when beaten a nose here last time out behind Ey Up It’s Maggie. She seems pretty interchangeable at 5f/6f so the step-up in trip today is not a concern.
Whilst she’s up a pound for her recent second, the mark (78) still looks much more manageable than the 85 she was racing off at the back end of last season.
METRIC WORTH A FEW POUNDS
⭕ 7.05 Musselburgh Metric is up 6lb (or should that be 2.72kg?) for her Leicester win last week but there was plenty to like about that success – not least of which the front two put five lengths between themselves and the third.
The runner-up that day was Star Start who was sent off at 2/5 having previously bolted home by 14 lengths under an inspired ride at Doncaster.
Asgard’s Captain makes the market for us here and whilst his current form is fair (including a dead-heat win at Ripon) it doesn’t look as good as that of Metric.
