⭕ 2.45 Doncaster, Saturday (Futurity Trophy) All eyes – and some speculative wallets – are on Ballydoyle’s City Of Troy and Henry Longfellow for next year’s Classics.
But, as Los Angeles showed in scoring at Deaville on Sunday from some strong markers, there are more quality Coolmore youngsters waiting in the wings.
Maybe it’s a case of ‘hold your horses’ until we have seen again the Frankel colt Diego Velasquez, a 2.4million-guinea yearling, close relative of Broome, and Capulet, a son of Justify, the same sire as City of Troy.
Both are Ballydoyle possibles for the Futurity on Saturday, won last year by Aidan O’Brien’s dual Derby star, Auguste Rodin.
Diego Velasquez and Capulet were one-two, half a length apart, in the Champions Juvenile at Leopardstown in September, a race won last year by Auguste Rodin.
O‘Brien bids for a dozen Futuritys on Town Moor: of his 11 so far, four were in the last six years, interrupted in 2019 and 2020.
Those in-betweens were Kameko (Andrew Balding), who would go on to win the 2020 Newmarket 2,000 Guineas, and Mac Swiney (Jim Bolger), subsequent winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
Ancient Wisdom (William Buick for Charlie Appleby) has been supplemented for the Futurity in Ballydoyle’s first clash of top two-year-olds with Godolphin.
James Doyle rides Diego Velazquez in the absence of Ryan Moore (serving a suspension on Saturday).
Punters who do their own ratings should check out Ancient Wisdom’s third behind Rosallion at Ascot in July; and Rosallion’s subsequent third in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster to Iberian and Sunway, Sunday’s Criterium International winner at Saint-Cloud.
The music goes round and round but currently still stops at the Dewhurst, in which Iberian was sixth, beaten nine lengths by City Of Troy.
EVENING TIME FOR THE NAP
⭕ 6.30 Wolverhampton Yarmouth is off which leaves an afternoon of jumping at Exeter and Hereford. Try as I might, I struggled to find anything at either meeting. The biggest surprise was to see good ground at both venues – Storm Babet obviously left them out.
A combination of very little early season to form to work with (both horses and trainers) and some impossible handicaps have led to me taking the afternoon off.
Sometimes it’s good to leave meetings though if you feel that way – it’s not as if we are short of race meetings on a daily basis.
I’m sticking with the flat and three bets from the nine races at Dunstall Park tonight.
The nap on the card looks to be Age Of Time for Charlie Appleby in the novice event at 6.30.
1 was nearly buying me 1 at the morning Betdaq Betting Exchange prices and that seems fair enough for the son of Dubawi to follow up on his quite comfortable course and distance success last time out.
He stepped up considerably on his Haydock debut but still ran green suggesting further improvement is likely and the third from that race New Chelsea gave the form a boost when going close in a better class race at Newbury last month in an event where the from two pulled well clear.
Winterfair shaped well on debut at Sandown and can only improve and though facing the all-weather for the first time is preferred to Nabilov who didn’t show too much on debut at Thirsk.
The Gosden’s run Annafel who should improve for her Chelmsford debut but the early market signs are not particularly positive.
TIME TO INTERVENE
⭕ 7.00 Wolverhampton Intervention has spurned better chances than this and he still looks too high in the handicap for my money. He also spoils his chances by quite often pulling hard.
Regal Envoy won well over course and distance last time out when making all but is up in both class and the weights.
I’ll take a chance with the Crisford’s runner Vespasian. The stable remain in great form and the handicapper has given him a 3lb present. He’s now 5lb lower than when finishing a close second over course and distance in a similar class 4 event in June so surely should get competitive on today’s terms?
THE LUCKY LAST
⭕ 8.30 Wolverhampton Master Of Combat is the warm favourite here but a little too warm for my liking having gone up 4lb for his win here last time out over a slightly shorter trip.
I’d rather play at nearly five times the odds on last year’s winner Lucky San Jore to follow up his win in this race 12 months ago.
He’s dropped back to the same mark of 73 and hinted at a return to form last time out at Lingfield when nibbled at in the market.
