LET’S GO TO THE BREEDERS CUP: Daqman checks out the cards for the two-day Breeders Cup at Santa Anita at the weekend. In which races have British and Irish raiders done best? How have stalls positions worked out the last twice the event was run at Santa Anita?

BREEDERS CUP: GOING ‘FAST’

EXPECT a big British blast of speed in the Juvenile Turf Sprint on Friday and same again in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, the very last race on Saturday.

These two front-runners carrying the flag in California – Big Evs and Live The Dream – are hot bet-and-lay plays in the market, suited by the track.

🇺🇸 9.00 Santa Anita, Friday (Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, 5f) Aidan O’Brien (Declarationofpeace 2017) and Charlie Appleby (Mischief Magic last year) have won it for the Irish and the English but our raiders were routed the last time the race was run at Santa Anita (2019).

Despite having five of the 12 runners, we finished 5th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, with the result by stall 9, 1, 3, winner made all.

That was in keeping with the previous Santa Anita (2016) running of this race, when the order in by starting gate was 9, 1, 2

🇺🇸 10.20 Santa Anita, Friday (Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, 1m) The home side usually wins this but Aidan O’Brien had a strong favourite at Keeneland last year in the Cheveley Park runner-up Meditate, and she surely won!

Results by stall when staged at Santa Anita: 2019 with 14 runners, 11, 5, 14; in 2016 also 14 ran, 3 beat 5 and 8

🇺🇸 11.40 Santa Anita, Friday (Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf, 1m) This is more like it! Charlie Appleby 3, Aidan O’Brien 3 in the decade.

The 2019 gate result (13 ran): 2 beat 7 and 8. In 2016 it was: 13, 1, 11

BREEDERS CUP: DAY TWO

🇺🇸 7.10 Santa Anita, Saturday (Breeders Cup Filly And Mare, Turf 1m 2f) Six out of 10 to the raiders! Winners at Santa Anita were Sir Michael Stoute and Joseph O‘Brien, with Aidan O’Brien, James Fanshawe,Charlie Appleby and Sir Michael again scoring at other venues.

Results by gate: 2019 (10 ran): 1, 5, 2. In 2016 (13 ran) 11, 8, 4

🇺🇸 8.30 Santa Anita, Saturday (Breeders Cup Mile, turf) Charlie Appleby, who’s won this for the last two years, expects to run Master Of The Seas, and Saeed Bin Suroor will saddle Mawj.

That would make up a formidable two-pronged Godolphin effort to capture the £867k first prize. They need the money!

Results by gate: 2019 (13 ran): 9, 5, 8. In 2016 (14 ran): 5, 8, 13.

🇺🇸 9.50 Santa Anita, Saturday (Breeders Cup Turf, 1m 4f) Charlie Appleby would,be on a hat-trick here, too, but doesn’t have a runner; he’s left it to Aidan O’Brien, three times a winner in the decade, and Team Gosden, just the once.

Results by gate: 2019 (12 ran): 9, 3, 5. In 2016 (14 ran): 12, 4, 10.

🇺🇸 10.40 Santa Anita, Saturday (Breeders Cup Classic, 1m 2f, Dirt) Leading trainer Bob Baffert, four in the decade, runs Arabian Knight in only his fourth ever race. He won the last day, stepped up to this trip.

Results by gate: 2019 (11 ran): 10, 8, 7. In 2016 (9 ran): 9, 4, 3.

🇺🇸 11.25 Santa Anita, Saturday (Breeders Cup Turf Sprint, 5f) Whatever Kevin Ryan (Glass Slippers 2010) can do for Yorkshire, Adam West hopes to do for Epsom with Live In The Dream, a front-runner who went close at Keeneland a month back over further.

Results by gate: 2019 (12 ran): 12, 11, 4. In 2016 (14 ran): 2, 1, 1.

EXPECTO-ING A WINNER

⭕ 1.22 Curragh Both Curragh and Catterick passed their morning inspections which was looking firmly odds against yesterday. The going is heavy at both venues.

It’s a fairly modest card by Curragh standards and the nursery handicap will be a huge test of stamina for the two-year-olds over a mile.

Rapid Mission heads the Betdaq Betting Exchange market and seemed to enjoy similar conditions at Tipperary last time out when runner-up but the overall recent form of trainer Joseph O’Brien (1-44) does remain a major concern.

The filly Expecto might be the percentage call. She did well to win at Gowran last time out after Rory Cleary lost an iron and the form can probably be upgraded. This will be tougher now she is up in the weights but confirmed form over distance and going will count for so much. She looks a little big in the market and I’ll play for a WIN 20 return.

Tiscommonknowledge ran her best race to date last time out at Naas when stepped up in trip but is an unknown quantity on this surface.

HENRY NOT ON THE COLD LIST

⭕ 3.22 Catterick Same deal here in terms of looking for a horse with proven stamina on the ground in this two mile handicap on the flat.

Cold Henry fits the bill. He won this same race last year (soft) and his only other career success has come over course and distance.

This will be more of a test ground wise but the booking of Billy Loughnane for the first time is an obvious positive.

John Berry’s Turbat Ness is consistent and ran well here last time but you know my feelings about horses that head up in the weights for NOT winning.

CARRY ON SYDNEY

⭕ 8.15 Newcastle Another nine races from Gosforth Park – I’ll save my nap for the last race of the day where Sydney Bay is taken to repeat his course and distance win from earlier this month.

He did well in the circumstances – recovering from being bumped at the start and just getting up by a head.

Inevitably he has gone up in the weights but only by 2lb. The thinking with him is that he could still be well handicapped given the considerable improvement he showed at Newcastle last time which was his first start for the Geoff Harker yard.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
