DERBY 14 WITH DRAW: Just 14 were today declared for Saturday’s Derby, with the Epsom course officially ‘good to soft’ but with ‘light rain’ forecast.

OAKS NINE: Only nine were left in Friday’s Oaks, with the favourite, Precise, not among them because of the ground conditions.

LEFT OPEN FOR GATE

⭕ 4.48 Nottingham I was surprised to see Barbury Boy shorter than Gatehouse in the early exchanges.

For my money Barbury Boy was disappointing when fourth at Haydock (having been sent off 4/5 fav) for a class 5 and is up to class 4 today.

Gatehouse is 2 from 4 (both wins on all-weather) and was in at a much deeper level at Newmarket last time out when fourth to Evanesco in a class 3. He may need to improve on that, even allowing for the drop in class but that’s not out of the question on just his fifth career start.

HARVEST BARLEY TONIGHT

⭕ 7.10 Ripon One of the most competitive races of the day on Betdaq Betting Exchange.

The course favours high drawn runners over this mile trip, especially in big field races like this.

Barley (drawn 9) and recent winner Kiss Me My Love (11) stand out against the rest of the field.

Barley is overdue a win but went close last week at Hamilton when beaten a short head by Sanafi Zabeel. He’s been raised 2lb for that effort but that doesn’t kick in yet so he comes into this on good terms weights wise.

Kiss Me My Love was a narrow winner herself last time out at Redcar beating Straight A by a nose. The front two pulled nicely clear in that race and she has chances of going close again off her 3lb higher mark.

Interesting to see small morning money about for the complete outsiders. It might turn out to be one of THOSE races.

However, it needs a leap of faith to summon up much enthusiasm for Eeetee (first start for 180 days) or The New Bay Pearl (well beaten on stable debut at Doncaster).

A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

⭕ 8.12 Ripon Course and distance winners are always worth a second look here and we have four in this sprint handicap. It’s also a course that suits front runners, so I’m looking for plenty of early pace.

Any further rain would help the cause of Wen Moon who disappointed here in better company but bounced back with a much better effort when third at Carlisle last time out. He looked the winner that day but just struggled close to the line and should be suited by this easier track.

Another C&D winner Canaria Queen is really consistent but has generally been mixing it at a lower level and a bigger danger may come from Rock Of England who followed up a Newcastle all-weather win in April with another strong run when back on the turf at Pontefract.
