CHRISTMAS EVE PREMIER LEAGUE: The Striker previews WOLVES v CHELSEA with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
WOLVES V CHELSEA
1pm For the first time in 28 years, we have a Premier League game on Christmas Eve! Wolves host Chelsea as the only Super Sunday game on BETDAQ Betting Exchange this week – it might be Super Sunday but as we all know over Christmas it’s easy to lose track of what day it is! There was plenty of opposition to this fixture; we had plenty of protests from fan groups about having a Christmas Eve fixture. I’m sure millions will enjoy it on TV, it is a little harsh on fans travelling but at the end of the day people can choose to attend the game or not. 1pm isn’t a bad kick off time either – any later would have been a little harsh from the Premier League for fans getting home!
We have a very interesting market; Chelsea are the favourites but they aren’t odds on. Not by much though; they are trading 2.02 at the time of writing with Wolves 3.9 and the draw is also 3.9. Chelsea have been having another very difficult season – so far though Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t faced any pressure from the media. Not nearly half the pressure Erik ten Hag is under at Manchester United anyway, and Chelsea are six points behind Manchester United have have sat in mid-table all season. Any chance of them getting back into the Top Four is already gone, and we all know how trigger happy the Chelsea owners are with managers.
Pochettino will point towards their stats, and say that they aren’t playing good football without getting results. It is right, but it wouldn’t push them into the European spots or where they want to be. Their average xG created figure is 1.54 which is the eighth best in the Premier League. Their main issue seems to be that they are conceding sloppy goals; they have conceded more than they should have done and that’s why they aren’t trading odds on. However, Wolves have been playing average football this season and I’m sure the 2.02 will be a popular bet on Chelsea.
Wolves only have an average xG created of 1.11 which is the fifth worst attacking figure in the Premier League. They have been very limited going forward, and that figure doesn’t get any better at home either. Indeed, Wolves have actually been creating more away from home compared to at home! They did beat Manchester City and Spurs here though, so we know that they can grind out results. Their average xG conceded is pretty high at 1.53, and it’s hard to be very positive about Wolves in my opinion.
I don’t have a strong opinion on the goals market here, but I would expect Wolves to sit back and Chelsea will have to make the running here. Under 2.5 goals might be a tempting bet 2.1 as Chelsea grind out a win. However, I like the 2.02 on Chelsea here – I would have them marginally odds on looking at the Wolves stats. However, I fully accept it’s hard to trust this Chelsea side because they have already dropped so many points this season. They can get a win here against an average Wolves. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and thanks to everyone who has followed the column for the opening half of the season!
