BLANK DAY IN IRELAND: Gowran Park stage the first meeting of the week in Ireland on Tuesday evening. So, for the third Monday in-a-row, Shamrock heads to Wolverhampton in search of a NAP. He has found winning naps in his last two raiding missions and explores the place market today.
I’m probably as guilty as anyone of ignoring the place markets and my New Year’s (well July 2nd) resolution is to look at these more closely.
There’s a classic case in point in the six runner 3.15 at Wolverhampton this afternoon. Being six runners we only get the two places but given there’s a red-hot favourite in the race in the shape of Oasis Cannes from Sir Mark Prescott’s yard, the comfort of an extra place and still getting over evens about my selection Aseela is
too tempting to resist.
In truth, I expect the Irish bred Aseela to go close to winning the race. I think this is an important factor in place betting. You have to be very positive about your selection winning and view the place market as an insurance rather than finding a horse you don’t think can win but can ‘sneak’ into a place.
Aseela made a very encouraging start to her career at Leicester, belying her starting price of 40/1, to take fourth and the extra furlong here should be very much in her favour.
In the early BETDAQ market we are looking at 2.8 for a place (midpoint between back and lay prices) v 6.6 in the win market.
This is one case where I’m more than happy to accept a shorter price with the carrot of an extra place.
