PREVIEW
Almost two years to the day Serena Williams beat Petra Kvitova in straight sets on her way to a fourth Wimbledon title. However, that has proved to be her last Grand Slam success, as the formerly formidable duopoly of Serena and her sister Venus, has gradually been replaced by a wave of European talent that has usurped their dominant position.
Petra Kvitkova is an opponent that fits the new trend and she has improved massively since being beaten by the American twice in 2010. The Czech caused something of a minor upset last year when lifting the Wimbledon title with a dominant display in the final over former world number one Maria Sharapova in straight sets.
This time around Kvitkova’s title defence has been portrayed as one of the quietest ever, with no one really considering the possibility she could retain her trophy, and coverage of her efforts in reaching the quarter-finals have been distinctly muted. Williams has assumed outright favouritism for the championship but she has hardly looked the force of old so far, as she came through a tight third-round match against China’s Zheng Jie 9-7 in the final set. Williams then dropped a set 2-6 versus Yaroslava Shvedova last time out.
On the other hand Kvitkova has been in imperious form, only dropping one set in four matches and winning four of her nine sets either 6-0 or 6-1. She has only faced one seeded player but her relatively short court time should mean she is fresher than Williams and it’s difficult to see why the market is so firmly in Williams’ favour. With Centre Court set for another day of excitement under the roof, Kvitova is surely a cracking bet to knock out the last American in the women’s draw.
