ETALON HAS A BIG FUTURE
⭕ 1.55 Sandown Seven runners are rated within 4lb of each other, and punters are hoping lightly-weighted Fast Buck and Man Again – both winners the last day – could have an edge on the crowd.
But it seems more likely they are tail-enders. Man Again hasn’t been seen since November, 2022, and may need to acclimatise, just arrived with David Pipe from France. Fast Buck beat only a small field at Wincanton.
A 12-year-old won this last year but The Last Day has very little form outside Aintree (where he’s 113). He needs a Harry Cobden energiser.
Etalon, a winner twice recently for the Skelsons since switched to chasing, was fourth in the Grade-3 Novices Hurdle Final here at the Esher venue last Spring. Reckoned to have a big future.
Gunsight Ridge has won here at class-2 level but Xcitations has scored two from two at Sandown in the last year, and is claimed off, making him the main threat to Etalon at a price; 10.5 BETDAQ offers.
SPIRIT GOES WELL FRESH
⭕ 3.47 Southwell Northern Spirit was favourite when third in a class 2 at Nottingham and, if it’s any indication for Southwell, he likes the Tapeta at Newcastle.
Slowly away the last twice, he comes here fresh after a longish break so could actually need restraint. He scored first run back last year.
Only Oisin Murphy has won on another four-year-old in the field, Grenham Bay, but the grey has been hard to win with since they were together last Spring.
Starshiba has tried Southwell once, two grades higher. He is on the right mark but this track looks sharp for one who has won elsewhere up to a mile.
Stablemate Billyjoh has scored over the CD but at a lower level, and Northern Spirit is double the offers, double the value at Betdaq Betting Exchange 6.8.
ANIMAL BACK TO BEST TRIP
⭕ 4.15 Sandown Animal has been beaten into a place twice since scoring over the CD at Sandown in December (soft), but the two last runs were both over extended distances.
Placenet was four in a row, six out of nine in France, up to last summer. Pulled up sole start over further since joining David Pipe but wind surgery may help.
Bretney is a big drifter to 15.0. That makes him value but he needs a drying day. He won the West Wales National a year ago in first-time blinkers off 7lb lower mark, and this is a class higher. Not easy to win with (3-19 over fences) and has scored only on good to soft.
Older horses haven’t been winning this, and the four of double-figure age in the field today are 1-21 in their last five or six races combined.
