⭕ 5.40 Musselburgh (Juvenile Hurdle Series Final) Fergal O’Brien sends a solitary raider to Edinburgh.
The odds-on Teorie ran too freely, fourth, in the qualifier for this over two furlongs shorter on the first day of the year. But he was a winner either side of that and was sent to Cheltenham for the Boodles (the old Fred Winter).
Rory The Cat had won the qualifier easily, despite giving Teorie the 7lb he was claimed off. Rory was completing a double that day but fell apart, only sixth, in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle in early February.
If there’s one to beat Teorie, it’s another lone ranger from a southern yard, Jamie Snowden’s Golden Maverick.
Snowden is lit up about this four-year-old, whose value shot up from €11,000 as a foal to 35,000gns as a 2yo and 100,000 at the Newmarket autumn sales of 2023.
Golden Maverick has progressed with every one of three starts, favourite each time, odds on for two of them.
He went clear of a small field at Haydock the last day, only having to be shaken up by Gavin Sheehan.
Getting 7lb from Teorie and 9lb from Balboa, who was third in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle, when Rory The Cat flopped in sixth.
CIGAR CAN LAND THE DOUBLE
⭕ 6.40 Musselburgh (Sea Pigeon Hurdle Series Final) The dual Champion Hurdle winner, Sea Pigeon competed in 85 races, which is more than double the total career tally of one of the top weights today, Russian Virtue.
But, in going for a hat-trick, Russian Virtue has to take on last year’s winner, Cuban Cigar, to whom he was only fourth – nearly 16 lengths behind – giving 9lb.
Level weights today and, even allowing for the claim of Alan Doyle (5), there isn’t the turnaround in weight to create a turnaround in form. Yet both Cuban Cigar and Russian Virtue are handicapped on 12st.
Coup De Coeur is an even stranger 12st topweight; he has won only in class 4 and is down 11lb on his original handicap mark since joining Micky Hammond from France.
Collingham won the County Hurdle here last February but has been out of form since and has dropped 7lb.
Scots Poet has Musselburgh form of 31321, still standing; third last year, after blundering two out, then sprawling on landing at the last. But his win here the last day has penalised him 6lb.
