DAQMAN EDGES SATURDAY PROFIT: It was Insanity to bet in the Shergar Cup at Ascot but Daqman managed to get through yesterday with an overall profit of 6.76 points. He napped Jarraaf in the Sprint. It was a triumph for the ladies team, led by Hayley Turner, and a big day for fillies at Newmarket and the Curragh.

FILLIES SET A CLASSIC MARKER: Babouche (Ger Lyons), who beat the colts in the Phoenix test at the Curragh, and Lake Victoria (Aidan O’Brien), who made a big splash in the fillies’ Sweet Solera at Newmarket, set themselves up to clash in the Group-1 Moyglare in September with a view to next year’s Guineas. HAATEM CAN HALT INSPIRAL
⭕ 3.04 Deauville (Prix Jacques Le Marois) England and Ireland have dominated this one-mile Group 1, with Team Gosden striking five times in the decade.
But controversy surrounds their hat-trick seeker, Inspiral, as Ryan Moore jocks off Kieran Shoemark, who has been beaten a total of near-20 lengths on the Frankel mare in the Lockinge and the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot this season.
There were excuses – a slow start in one and the disadvantage of the one stall in another – and John Gosden has been at pains not to criticise Shoemark.
Frankie Dettori is much missed as her winning pilot two years running, and the decision was made to bring in Ryan Moore; her punters expect to be thankful.
But the race has been won only once in the decade by one of her age; that was also a five-year-old mare.
Three-year-olds are well clear, 6-3, and are represented today by a reliable tough-nut, Haatem, who represents Curragh and Newmarket Classic form.
The Jersey Stakes winner was third in the 2,000 at Newmarket but closed right down on the runner-up that day when they were head to head in the Irish version, Rosallion prevailing over stablemate Haatem by a diminishing head.
The French today field their Guineas winner,, but he was no match for Rosallion when third in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and does not now have the soft ground of his winning form.
The same applies to Marhaba Ya Sanafi, King Gold and Big Rock, who was runner-up in this a year ago, but has lost his form since changing stables.
Charyn was thought to prefer cut but the Dark Angel grey won the Queen Anne on the fast surface at Royal Ascot, making it three wins out of four.
Inspiral and Charyn are rated level-peggings when you take the sex allowance into account but Haatem closes them right down, thanks to his allowance as a three-year-old.
Quddwah is on the upgrade but beat only a Group-3 animal in the Summer Mile, and Daqman takes Haatem (BETDAQ 7.0) and Charyn to hold Inspiral.
OH BOY, HERE’S A NAP
⭕ 3.10 Ripon A nursery which should go to Richard Fahey’s Lesley’s Boy who should be the one most suited by the step up in distance.
He improved on a mid-field debut at Yarmouth to win going away at Wetherby over five and a half furlongs and the step up to six furlongs will suit – and in time even further.
The runner-up from that race Bella Love has been placed in her two subsequent starts to give the form a rubber stamp.
Main danger on the Betdaq Betting Exchange market looks to be Easy Peeler who pipped (did you see what I did there?) Cugini to win a class 5 at Catterick.
She actually made quite hard work that day of landing the odds and whilst she is still entitled to improve the runner-up from that race did little to frank the form when 7th at Beverley next time and in any event this looks a little more competitive.
Dark Thunderstorm brings the most experience to the table but has something to find already on the figures and that’s before you factor in likely improvement from the lighter raced rivals.
The one thing in favour of the Alice Haynes runner is he likes to bowl along and Ripon is a course that suits front runners. He certainly has place prospects in a race that in time may work out better than a humble class 5.
RETURN TICKET TO ST PANCRAS
⭕ 3.40 Ripon A class 4 makes this the race of the day at Ripon – on paper at least! Cool Legend might be worth taking on at the front of the Betdaq market.
The William Haggas trained runner is on a recovery mission having been a beaten favourite in his last two races and although they came in better looking class 4’s at Goodwood and Newbury he has looked an awkward ride and I probably want to adopt wait and see tactics as to whether the first time cheekpieces today bring about a positive reaction.
I prefer Martyn Meade’s St Pancras who made a winning handicap debut at Pontefract and the resulting 4lb hike in the weights doesn’t look overly harsh.
Monsieur Melee is consistent but exposed and might need cut in the ground to show his best form.
WING AND A PRAYER
⭕ 4.00 Leicester Lady Wingalong has been something of a revelation since joining David Evans (form to the right of the -) from Edmond Kent 0800000-1422213
Even off a career high mark she looks hard to oppose in a very moderate race where Available Angel looks the only danger.
