WHEN BAD GROUND IS PIVOTAL

⭕ 3.15 Ascot, Saturday (British Champions Mile) Further rain forecast could turn this into another French victory, as it did last year with a one-two of Big Rock and Facteur Cheval, following on The Revenant’s romp in the mud of 2020.

Those punted all this week have been Facteur Cheval, back again with his rating increased 3lb to 120, the French Guineas winner Metropolitan, and Charyn who beat Metropolitan in the Jacques Le Marois.

It was soft when Metropolitan beat Dancing Gemini in that Guineas at Longchamp but good when Charyn beat Metropolitan at Deauville.

Last year, Inspiral had outrun Big Rock in the Jacques le Marois but had to miss the Champions Mile when Big Rock went so far clear that his rider, Aurelien Lemaitre, was seen celebrating before the finish in the manner of – and perhaps deliberately in front of – Mickael Barzalona, six lengths behind on Facteur Cheval, who will now be ridden by Maxime Guyon.

Tamfana, who beat Inspiral in the Sun Chariot the last day, is another one punted this week, along with Aidan O’Brien’s Henry Longfellow, who was third when Barzalona on Tribalist beat Charyn in the Prix du Moulin (Longchamp soft last month).

Willam Knight has watched French jockeys win this race and has booked the French champion, Christophe Soumillon, for Checkandchallenge, who was 15-lengths fourth last year. Can he make that much difference?

TIGER, TIGER BURNING BRIGHT

⭕ 3.50 Brighton today Little Tiger has to race off 60 in future but gets in here with a 6lb penalty raising his mark to 54, despite being eased down when going clear over the course and distance here at Brighton nine days ago.

There are other CD winners in the race: Chourmo won on good to firm; Fighting Poet on good and on firm, beaten twice with soft in the going return; Irezumi has never reached the frame on soft and his sole success here at Brighton was on firm.

Fullforward had his first win in 24 starts since changing stables and has never put two races together before. He usually blanks for eight or 15 starts between strikes.

OTAGO LOOKS SET FOR REPEAT

⭕ 4.20 Brighton Otago won this race last year and, though seven years old now, shows no signs of deterioration.

He’s won off 65, 61 and 58 at Brighton and his 60 mark today is 1lb lower than for last year’s success in this race.

Compare with Maxzeno, who has shuffled down the card from a mark of 73 over the last 18 months to 62 at Lingfield in August, when he finished last of five.

Voodoo Ray may also need to come down further, though you wouldn’t think so, based on his Brighton strike off 55, making all the running.

It was his third consecutive win under Tom Queally between 5.5f and 7f whereas Romanovich has had four different riders for his four successes (one of them here). William Carson is 1-4 and saddled with his highest mark.

FANTASTIKAS TO SHOW CLASS

⭕ 2.53 Wincanton Four of his five strikes have been at Newton Abbot, and he’s won four times after a break. This is not ‘Newton’ and Investment Manager has already had his usual ‘win when fresh’.

Hold Your Fort has won four in a row at Newton Abbot. This not ‘Newton’ and he steps up to a class 3, some 43lb higher than when the sequence started in June.

Lord Accord positively strolled home at Sedgefield, dropped in grade but the class horse of the race is Fantastikas, who struggled to live up to his reputation last season, so is well handicapped now.

What you do with such an animal is get him fit first time, drop him down in grade and – if your yard is in form – have the confidence to ‘go for it.’

In the case of Nigel Twiston-Davies, the yard is 10-24 still standing, and he would love to take 10-grand off the local stables, of Joe Tizzard (Investment Manager), Paul Nicholls (Stratagem) and Neil Mulholland (Lord Accord).
