CALANDAGAN CLEAR TOP-RATED

⭕ 3.55 Ascot tomorrow (Champion Stakes, 1m 2f) The market says it’s a three-way showdown: England (Economics), France (Calandagan) and Ireland (Los Angeles).

125 CALANDAGAN Francis-Henri Graffard, whose King George giant, the gelding Goliath, has to swerve the Arc for the Japan Cup, saddles another gelding, Calandagan, here.

The length runner-up to City of Troy on firm ground in the Juddmonte International, after scoring here at Ascot on firm when completing a hat-trick from his heavy-ground double at Longchamp. Versatile or what!

123 ECONOMICS Though William Haggas’s three-year-old had to miss the Derby, he is just a pound behind City Of Troy in the overall ratings after four wins in a row, completed in the Irish Champion Stakes by a neck over Auguste Rodin.

Economics is a winner on good to soft and his sire, Night Of Thunder, gets the full range of ground preferences in his progeny.

120 LOS ANGELES Winner of two Group-1 prizes for Aidan O’Brien (a criterium in France as a two-year-old and the Irish Derby in June), where Economics has won one, Calandagan none.

Only fourth to Economics in the Irish Champion Stakes but third on very soft ground in the Arc behind Bluestocking.

MATTICE BACK IN COMFORT ZONE

⭕ 2.27 Redcar today (Sam Hall Memorial) In the good old, bad old days, Sam Hall was king of the northern handicaps.

Sam, who trained more than 1,000 winners from his Yorkshire base, won the Zetland Gold Cup here at Redcar five times.

Project Dante dropped 21lb to this class 5 to win here the last day, and Geoff Oldroyd’s string is running 100% to form, according to the Racing Post racecard assessment. Mattice, Parisiac and Impressor are all winners on deep ground.

It’s the first time Mattice has been dropped to this level since he scored for Tim Easterby 12 races back at Ripon in May. Before that, he won a Beverley class 4 on heavy.

Tim is probably the nearest you’ll get to Sam Hall’s artistry with the handicap and training skill required to go with it. Check out latest Betdaq Betting Exchange prices.

DERHAM SET FOR A FIVE-TIMER

⭕ 3.55 Uttoxeter The field for this 2m 4f hurdle ranges from an absence of 133 days to 698. That could be a problem for Pyramid Place, a winner first time back last season but who needs a pace to aim at.

At this level, the best race of the day, it creates a class-2 clash between Harry Derham and Dan Skelton, who both learned their skills with Paul Nicholls.

With 64 winners already this season, Skelton finished the 2023-4 campaign on 121, 10 behind Nicholls but marginally in front on prizemoney won. However, both failed to catch the £3.3m made from only 28 winners by Willie Mullins in his constant attack on the top prizes over here.

Derham, assistant trainer to Nicholls for six years, had 44 winners but the best strike rate (25%) of any English handler in the top 50.

His Fame And Glory nine-year–old, 3-6 for the yard, has had just one start since May, 2023, an impressive winning run in a Pertemps qualifier at Kempton. So we know Dargiannini can win when fresh.

Dan Skelton’s grey Lac De Constance quickly established a 132 rating over hurdles but his career over fences was probably hampered by his being hiked 13lb for winning a three-horse affair at Kempton almost two years ago.

Back to hurdles last year, he showed distinct signs at Haydock that he could regain his footing over hurdles.

After a double at Wincanton yesterday, Harry Derham is 1421111 in 11 days, so it’s unlikely Dargiannini will be short on fitness.

PREPPING FOR GLAMOUR RIDE

⭕ 6.00 Newcastle Silvestre De Sousa has won £1.6m from 50 winners for Roger Varian, who has taken this prize twice in the last five years.

Immediately after winning this, both went on to score elsewhere on the AW scene at Chelmsford and Kempton. So siding with Glamorous Marlene could land you two winners for the price of one!

This is Silvestre’s return to the British track, as a warm-up for his ride on Charyn in tomorrow’s British Champions Mile at Ascot.

Glamorous Marlene was not out of place, well backed on debut, despite running green, slowly away in the wide-open spaces of Newmarket heath.
