Andy Murray guaranteed himself a shot at becoming the first British male to win an Olympic tennis medal in 100 years, with a 6-4 6-1 destruction of Spain’s Nicolas Almagro at Wimbledon yesterday. That was an encouraging display and the Scot faces Serbia’s world number two Novak Djokovic today in what should be an exciting contest.
Djokovic lost his number one ranking to Roger Federer last month when he failed to retain his Wimbledon crown but he is still widely regarded as the best player in the world at the moment. The Beijing bronze medallist saw off Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his quarter-final, winning 6-1 7-5 in an impressive display.
Overall the five-time Grand Slam champion has looked exceptional in seeing off the likes of Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt on his way to the last four. Murray has only dropped one set so far as he seeks to make amends for losing the Wimbledon final here a few weeks ago and the head-to-head record between the duo suggests it will be a close game.
Djokovic has won eight of their 13 encounters but there’s little to choose between the pair in recent clashes. The BETDAQ market has Djokovic as favourite and that’s about right, but considering what is at stake for the two players, and how competitive the action is likely to be, betting on three sets has to be the way to go.
