JOCKEY AT THE DOUBLE: 209-1: Kieran Shoemark landed a 209-1 double on an opening day at Newmarket yesterday when only one favourite got home in front and times were slow despite good, good to firm ground. Daqman fancies Shoemark’s run to continue in the opening race on day two.

HOLD ON AND NEVER LET GO

⭕ 1.15 Newmarket Cajole has been forced up the ladder: handicap, Listed, Group-3 twice and achieved a 15lb rise but not a lot of prizemoney, winning only her maiden.

Elwateen, too, is a maiden winner only; but, with her, push amounts to shove, straight into a Group-1 triple, including 1,000 Guineas and Oaks.

She’s fallen short every time but reckoned a 6lb better filly than Cajole, who meets her Royal Ascot conqueror, Never Let Go 3lb worse off.

Elwateen’s stablemate, Live Your Dream, had the market spinning yesterday, at one stage dislodging Palladium as Rose Bowl favourite. Neither was placed to a 20-1 shot! It’s that sort of meeting and we were wise not to over expose the wallet.

The answer in this one may be the trainer of that 20-1 hit, Ed Walker, whose Never Let Go beat Cajole when giving weight in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot. Betdaq Betting Exchange 7.2 taken.

STYLE BACK ON SAFE GROUND

⭕ 1.50 Newmarket Listed placed five times out of six without winning yet stepping up a grade to Group 3.

That’s Karmology, who was just half a length off Ambiente Amigo in the Nottinghamshire Oaks in the Spring.

Yes, it’s all very much like the opening race but who does compensation await; who is the best among these losers?

Just when I thought Miss Justice might be the answer, having improved 17lb since July, I found that Revoir split Miss Justice and a well-beaten Ambiente Amigo at Salisbury last month.

And, while Revoir eased when books opened, stablemate Favourite Memory was one for the money.

Beckett has two runners, Gosden has three and Charlie Appleby has the two at the front of the market.

Spirited Style either didn’t like the travel or the soft ground when flopping in the German Oaks at Dusseldorf.

But Silent Love opens the door for her on collateral form: five lengths behind Spirited Style at Haydock, she beat Favourite Memory at Kempton and outstayed Jane Temple on the July Course, with Karmology beaten five lengths.

AWAKEN ON GUINEAS TRAIL

⭕ 2.25 Newmarket (Rockfel Stakes) The one-stall goes for a four-timer in this but the ‘lucky’ stall holder is Ice Sovereigns, a 35.0 chance in BETDAQ offers this morning.

Her claim-to-fame is a double at Carlisle! But the winner will be 7-1 or shorter (eight out of 10) if the stats work out.

Touleen beat long-odds-on Zanthos in a Leicester prep for this, when the favourite refused to settle.

Contrast with The Prettiest Star, cool but sparkling at Nottingham while, when Awaken was runner-up in the Albany, she reminded racereaders of the same stable’s Guineas winner, Cachet, who was also runner-up in the same race.

Awaken’s last last run on the soft can be ignored. BETDAQ offers of 19.0 this morning.

14.0 DETAIN HAS DERBY FORM

⭕ 3.00 Newmarket Six of the last seven winners of this Group 2 (1m) were drawn in the low three stalls.

This stat highlights a chance of stopping Opera Ballo’s hat-trick or a Zeus Olympios four-timer. Or both.

Zeus Olympios went clear in the Superior Mile at Haydock, leaving behind Prague and Snow Master.

But I’ll give a last chance to Detain, beaten less than a length, third, in the French Derby behind Camille Pissarro.
