DAQMAN PARIS ONE-TWO ALREADY: Daqman prepped for Arc weekend today and tomorrow with two bets in the Prix Dahlia at Saint-Cloud yesterday and they finished first and second:

WON 27-10 ASHARIBA (Prix Dahlia, Saint-Cloud)
(RAINBOWS EDGE 2nd 17-10 same race yesterday)

CAN HE FIND A SOFT TOUCH TODAY: It could be softer at Ascot than it is at Longchamp for the opening of the Arc meeting. Check your Arc form for horses running today that can boost your fancy. Check the Ascot results for clues to Champions Day later in the month.

GOLD SACRED TO THE FRENCH

⭕ 12.58 Longchamp (Prix du Cadran) David Menuisier won the main event at Saint-Cloud yesterday, Ashariba making virtually all in the Prix Dahlia under Cristian Demuro, then kicking away from the late challenge of Rainbows Edge.

They team up again with Sunway but the Irish Derby runner-up and King George fourth as a three-year-old has been placed only in Group-3 this year.

His first attempt beyond 2m in the Yorkshire Cup was not very informative; he set a fast pace in the early stages and ran out of steam.

LAYS LOGIC: That was the race Coltrane won in 2022 and he was second over today’s trip in the following year’s Ascot Gold Cup, is eight now and has been fifth the last twice for that English gold at Ascot.

Aidan O’Brien has won this twice in the last three years, both times with Kyprios as odds-on favourite.

Queenstown (at 5.7 on BETDAQ) has been more than a stone away from being a Kyprios but I’m reckoning on improvement: this pacey sort was ridden differently when third, running on, in the Irish Cesarewitch and today’s race does not look strong.

The French improver Sacred Spirit (Maxime Guyon, BETDAQ 7.8) has been out of the frame just twice in 17 starts since his debut, with trainer Andre Fabre scoring seven times in the last 10 days of September.

TIDE CAN TURN FOR SANDS

⭕ 2.40 Newmarket (Sun Chariot Stakes) You have to bet on the rain, and the effect on the ground, as well as the form in England today.

Lady Of Spain, Spiritual and Saqqara Sands (all Group 3 at best so far), along with Sparks Fly (Listed), are the soft-ground winners so far against Fallen Angel (four Group 1) and Cinderella’s Dream (two).

Saqqara Sands is open to further improvement with an astute trainer of top fillies at BETDAQ 21.0 (three places 4.1) this morning.

APOLLO SET FOR TAKE-OFF

⭕ 3.00 Ascot (Bengough Stakes) Apollo One won this 6f Group 3 on soft ground last year after being nosed out of victory in the Portland. Three weeks ago, he was back to form in the same race, this time beaten only half a length. BETDAQ 5.5.

Annaf did better, winning the 2023 Portland (on soft) then the Bengough, but has not scored in 14 English starts since.

Quinault landed a 6f hat-trick in soft ground last summer and this year won the Criterion at York in June over 7f at this Group-3 level. BETDAQ 5.8.

18.0 ‘CARRY’ THE ONE AGAIN

⭕ 3.35 Ascot I’ll take one high, one low in the draw here, both likely to show their true colours in autumn ground.

Carrytheone (out of 13) had to be switched, beaten five lengths in this last year, making up for it big time by winning the Balmoral at the Champions meeting. Betdaq Betting Exchange 18.0 taken.

Apiarist is better than the bare form and was the overnight gamble of the race with bookies, though 13.5 still offered on BETDAQ this morning.

FABRE CAN KEEP IT AT HOME

⭕ 4.00 Longchamp (Prix Royallieu) Though Andre Fabre has won this four times, recent names on the scoresheet include Team Gosden (3) and William Haggas (2), with no French-trained winner for eight years.

Though this is labelled Group 1 we are largely talking about fillies and mares not quite up to that level.. Or they would be in the Arc!

LAYS LOGIC: Example is Bedtime Story, who has been beaten consecutively over 1m 2f in races won by by three Arc contenders, Aventure, Gezora and Quisisana.

She hasn’t really won a ‘race’ at Group level, just back-to-back defeats of her stablemate Exactly as a two-year-old.

In June, Aidan O’Brien ‘hoped’ the answer was a step up to 1m 2f; now he ‘hopes’ the 1m 6f today will produce the goods. Hard to spend money on hope.

Santorini Star beat Consent a neck in the Park Hill, giving 9lb, so she is actually better off here and we know she stays further (winner over 2m before that).

The French might get one back here, either through Indalimos or via Francis Graffard’s filly Latakia, respectively 7.5 and 5.0 on BETDAQ as I write.

Andre Fabre’s Indalimos kicked clear of Consent at level weights at Deauville in August.
Latakia was off the track a long while but as a princess in the Juddmonte camp brought back with extreme care and attention, she could wear an Arc-meeting crown for her sire, Frankel.
