THE CLASH OF THE FILLIES.

⭕ 2.45 Ascot, Saturday (British Champions Fillies and Mares) AGE: 8 out of 10 winners have been 3yo yet Kalpana and Estrange are heading the market at age four.

Winners of this are far apart: they ran at the Arc meeting or were returning fresh from two or three months off, notably saved up by Team Gosden (Star Catcher 2019 and Emily Upjohn 2022).

Yet eight out of 10 winners have been no bigger than 5-1 at SP – three favourites – though 16-1 and 22-1 outsiders mingled with them in the winners’ enclosure.

Aidan O’Brien landed back-to-back wins with Hydrangea and Magical (2017-18), who had both been seen at the Arc meeting, where his Bedtime Story didn’t like the very soft ground when only seventh in the Royallieu (Latakia was 5th, Shaha 8th).

Paddy Twomey’s One Look was beaten a short neck and a short head in the Opera, with Wemightakedlongway fourth. Returning from the Arc itself are Kalpana (7th) and Quisisana (9th)

LION’S LEAP IN THE MARKET

⭕ 3.25 Ascot, Saturday (Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes) AGE: 3yo are 15-25 this century; only three four-year-olds have scored, none older than five.

TRAINERS: Team Gosden 4, Aidan O’Brien 3, Team Hannon 2, Roger Varian 2. STALLS: only one lower than 6 since 2015.

This has been headlined as a clash of the greys, Field Of Gold v Fallen Angel, since Aidan O’Brien’s Delacroix was confirmed for the Champion Stakes, later on the card.

But, after that news, an O’Brien alternative, the Lion In Winter, has crashed in the market, along with another Irish-trained, Alakazi, who runs for Johnny Murtagh in the Arc-winning colours of the Aga Khan.

IT’S THE ROCK N ROLL SHOW

⭕ 3.44 Nottingham today The stayers are out in force for this two mile handicap which includes the two previous course and distance winners Campaign Trail and Call My Bluff. Of that pair the former is preferred.

However, the form horse coming into the race is Rock N Roll Pinkie who proved herself in a higher grade at York two starts ago over today’s trip and that form looks rock solid.

She was raised again in grade to a class 2 here last time out over the shorter 1m 6f trip and was by no means disgraced when finishing third and should be suited by the extended trip and better ground. She is a sporting Betdaq Betting Exchange WIN 20 nap on a day of limited opportunities.

Andrew Balding’s Good Show has been campaigned at a higher level this season but hasn’t shown a great deal and it’s debatable whether the 3lb drop will bring about the required improvement even at this lower level.

REACH FOR THE MOON

⭕ 4.14 Nottingham We often talk about horses with ‘seconditis’ but in the case of Grey Phoenix here it is more ‘fourthitis’. The Dr Richard Newland trained runner has finished fourth in all five of her career starts so far which must be some kind of record?

She has a tough nut to crack here in the form of Moonjed who has run well in all three starts since joining Michael Appleby with his best effort yet coming last time out at Kempton.

Off the same mark here he should take a lot of beating.

KITARO TO KICH ON

⭕ 7.10 Kempton There are signs that the George Baker trained Kitaro Kich is returning to the kind of early season form that saw him notch up a sequence of 1311212.

He ran well in second here last week and the drop back from a mile to seven furlongs should be perfect for the Epsom trained runner and regular pilot Neil Callan.
