TRAWLERMAN TRUE THREAT
⭕ 12.55 Ascot (Long Distance Cup, 2m) AGE: 4yo and 5yo shared 7-10 but stayers’ sequences by Trueshan and Kyprios have given six-year-olds 2-3.
Now here’s another set of old boys trying to face down three-year-olds, who have won just three times this century.
Unless there is a mishap, or an off day, the winner in 2023 and third to Kyprios last year, Trawlerman beats the oldies and adds to this year’s hat-trick.
He beat Sweet William in both the Gold Cup here at Ascot at the royal meeting and the Lonsdale at York.
Aidan O’Brien tries to control the race with handicapper Saratoga and classy Stay True, third in the St Leger behind stablemate Scandinavia.
Al Qareem, a front-runner who doesn’t get this trip, could be worried for speed by Saratoga and they then give way to Stay True (BETDAQ 8.6).
Sweet William hasn’t got his ground but Trawlerman has and the outcome is whether he can grind it out against the young pretender, who has to prove he can stay.
33-1 ‘STAND’ AND DELIVER
⭕ 2.05 Ascot (Sprint) This remains the only Group race won by Kind Of Blue, as a three-year-old.
As when Creative Force (2021) and Sands Of Mali (2018) also won it at that age, the going was soft.
Rayevka and Powerful Glory seem out of luck, weather wise, among this year’s three-year-olds. Art Power and King Cuan, too, need cut.
But the firmish ground will suit the second-season animal, Big Mojo, who beat Kind Of Blue (2nd), Flora Of Bermuda (3rd), an off-colour Lazzat (5th) and Inisherin (6th) in the Haydock Sprint (going good). That race was won last year by Montassib from Kind Of Blue.
History says you would be wise to look among the 7f-plus winners: Lazzat (7) and Montassib (3) of the low drawn, and Kind Of Blue out of 18, racing with Big Mojo (20) and Witness Stand (19), the best outsider for whom Colin Keane has been booked.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 4.1 Lazzat, 10.5 Big Mojo, 32 Witness Stand (7.4 three places)
MIGHT WIN ON THIS GROUND
⭕ 2.45 Ascot (Fillies and Mares) Plenty of excuses this term for Kalpana (form 32220), who won this last year on the soft.
Plenty of excuses for Bedtime Story – didn’t like it soft when only seventh in the Royallieu (Latakia 5th) – but plenty of reasons for them.. like eight consecutive Group-1 defeats!
Paddy Twomey’s One Look was beaten a short neck and a short head in the Opera, with Wemightakedlongway fourth.
But that was soft (1m 2f) and Wemightakedlongway was Irish Oaks second to Minnie Hauk (good, 1m 4f), which was an improvement on her Epsom Oaks fourth to the same filly (soft). BETDAQ 11.5 taken.
LION IS PLACED TO POUNCE
⭕ 3.25 Ascot (Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes) Came too late to land the 2,000 Guineas but won the Irish 2,000 and the St James’s Palace Stakes here at Ascot, making Colin Keane Field Of Gold’s Group-1 kingmaker (2-2).
Assuming a three-year-old wins it, the danger is well-drawn Alakazi in the Aga Khan’s Arc winning colours, his rating raised 26lb in a hot summer run. BETDAQ 54.0 (three places 10.0)
Trainer Johnny Murtagh has to be caught on a winning streak and he is certainly in top form on turf: 110011 for his last six starters, including 2-2 winning favourites, and he also discord at Dundalk last night.
One-time Derby favourite, The Lion In Winter, has been a slow learner but has his ground today and could be placed. Betdaq Betting Exchange 14.5 (three places 4.6)
RECKONING ON ECONOMICS
⭕ 4.05 Ascot (Champion Stakes) I flagged this earlier in the week – take a look back at Thursday’s column – as England (Ombudsman and Economics) versus France (Calandagan) and Ireland (Delacroix)
Aidan O’Brien has a poor record in the race and Ombudsman beat Delacroix three-and-a-half lengths in the Juddmonte International.
Calandagan has beaten fillies to his two Group-1 wins, both over 1m 4f and King George runner-up Kalpana has let the form down.
So my danger to Ombudsman is Economics (BETDAQ 14.5), Irish Champion Stakes winner last year.
It would be a remarkable feat for William Haggas to bring him back a year on but he is a remarkable trainer.
SPENCER FOR 20.0 ARISAIG
⭕ 4.40 Ascot (Balmoral Handicap) A poor race for favourites (1-10), with a recent run of massive SPs: 14-1, 25-1 and 80-1.
It may help to locate ages 4 and 5 (7-10) in low stalls (1, 3, 4 and 5 have won 6-10).
David O’Meara, who has won it three times in eight years, has already defied the odds by having his three randomly drawn in stalls 3, 5 and 6.
So he’s got a little race all his own with Bopedro, Cerulean Bay (13.0 offers) and Theoryofeverything!
But poised against him, down in class, is Charlie Johnston’s consistent Arisaig, with Jamie Spencer booked. BETDAQ 20.0 and 3.9 four places.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
