ALWAYS A PLACE FOR BETDAQ BETTING: The biggest shocks ever in one day’s racing, and Champions Day at that! That was Ascot yesterday, with Daqman lucky to get among the big prices, 12-1 and 22-1 for places on BETDAQ and returns totalling 40.40. So 46.05 in profit over four days with two naps in the bag.

MORE DAQMAN WINNER-FINDING: When the Flat-season champions are decided and wacky races spoil the show for punters, it’s time to turn to the Jumps. The Cheltenham season starts next weekend with more ways of winner–finding from Daqman.

100-1 AND 200-1 CHAMPIONS

It was the best of times and the worst of times. Worthy champions yesterday mixed with 200-1 and 100-1 winners never before seen on a Group-1 card.

Jockey Jason Watson was in tears after Cicero’s Gift won the QE11 at 100-1, while trainer Richard Fahey was in shock.

He said that Powerful Glory’s Champions Sprint at 200-1 had been the target all along but so far back in the horse’s troubled season that it had lost credibility but was ‘still his only route’.

🏆 CHAMPIONS! Trawlerman in the Long Distance Cup for John and Thady Gosden and Kalpana who took the fillies and mares again for champion British trainer, Andrew Balding.

But those great winners and those superb trainers finally had to yield to the French.

Francis-Henri Graffard, known as ‘the quiet man’, added to his Arc de Triomphe success of Daryz when King George winner Calandagan beat the favourite, Ombudsman, in the Champion Stakes with Irish Champion hero, Delacroix, only fourth.

If only we’d known what the trainer admitted after the event: he had galloped Daryz and Calandagan together at home.

🏆 CHAMPIONS! Winning jockey on both was Mickael Barzalona, he and Graffard returning the Aga Khan’s racing dynasty to the top of the tree in Europe.

PULL OVER FOR JERSEY

⭕ 1.33 Longchamp (Prix Du Conseil de Paris) This is the race Goliath won last year but his buoyant trainer Francis-Henri Graffard swerves it this time around.

He and jockey Mickael Barzalona hope to step up their Frankel filly, Velikaya, from an easy handicap success to bag black type in the Listed at 2.50.

The danger is Rainbows Edge for John and Thady Gosden, with Oisin Murphy on one of two top mounts today.

The Group-2 Conseil has Murphy – crowned British champion jockey at Ascot yesterday – riding for Andre Fabre on the unbeaten Yellow Jersey, on whom he won at Deauville in August.

Pull over, Dubai Honour! Yellow Jersey is half your age and gets 6lb three-year-olds’ allowance.

SETTLE ON SUMMER SNOW

⭕ 2.55 Leopardstown (Foxrock Cup) Summer Snow tries to continue her good run and fend off the three-year-olds.

Despite a rise of 21lb for back-to-back strikes, she stepped up to a mile and finished third here in August, the one-two both winners since. So rested and form doubly boosted.

ROAD THE END FOR RUBAUD

⭕ 3.50 Kempton This Listed hurdle and three class-3 chases have failed to attract many runners to the London track.

The best horse on show is probably Burdett Road, who is fit from the Flat, not disgraced at Group level.

Rubaud has won this two years running but Paul Nicholls’ current form is a modest 1-13 and a hat-trick bid has failed twice in this event in recent years.

Sceau Royal (2021-22) won two; flopped fourth of five, going for a race treble. Silver Streak won two (2019-20); second of four at odds-on in the hat-trick attempt.
