We have a huge game between Slovakia and Northern Ireland with a play in the Playoffs on the line. Everyone would have expected Germany to top this Group without much fuss; after a shock loss to Slovakia on matchday one there might be a bit more drama than most football fans expected. As things stand, Germany and Slovakia both have nine points with Northern Ireland behind them on six.
Germany meet Luxembourg while these two play, and they will be fully expected to win that game – they are trading as short as 1.07! That puts all the pressure on this fixture – from a Northern Ireland point of view, if they can win here then Slovakia have to play Germany on the final matchday while Northern Ireland meet Luxembourg. Even a draw wouldn’t be the worst outcome for Northern Ireland here considering Slovakia are away to Germany on the final matchday. A win for Slovakia would confirm their Playoff place, and then give them a shot at an upset and topping the Group.
A massive game for both sides then. As you would expect with home advantage, Slovakia come into the game as the favourites at 2.1 with Northern Ireland 4.4 and the draw is 3.25 at the time of writing. Slovakia beating Germany was a massive setback for Northern Ireland on the first matchday, but they’ve given themselves a big chance when beating Slovakia in October. Like I said above, if the final matchday goes as expected – a draw here for Northern Ireland would be a cracking result.
I would expect them to approach the game with that mindset, and Slovakia will have to make all the running here. At home they have been strong though – much stronger than away from home – they even made hard work of beating Luxembourg away from home. I really don’t think there’s much between the sides here, and I do feel that the 2.1 on Slovakia is a little short in the match odds market. With Slovakia struggling to score goals and create good quality chances, along with a draw suiting Northern Ireland here – another option has to be Under 2.5 goals at 1.56. I couldn’t put anyone off either bet, but on balance I prefer the Slovakia lay from a value point of view.
