It’s Cup action in Spain and Italy, along with the Carabao Cup Semi-Finals in England – but we also have a full midweek fixture list in the Bundesliga. We have some interesting markets on Tuesday night, but the pick for me is Bayer Leverkusen away to Hamburg. Leverkusen have already been through a lot this season; they pulled the plug on Erik ten Hag very early in the season – a shock to some – but that turned out to be the right decision in hindsight. They lost a big game at the weekend though, getting hammered 4-1 at home against Stuttgart.
It’s fair to say that they need a bounce back win here – that win for Stuttgart at the weekend put them level on points with Leverkusen in the top four race. Bayern are obviously away and gone for the title, but those Champions League spots for third and fourth should be hard fought. It’s no surprise that Leverkusen come into this game as the favourites – Hamburg only came up from Bundesliga 2 but they have been doing well this season. They’ve basically been performing at a mid-table level.
Obviously the gulf in class these days between the top flight and the league below has grown immensely with the money at the top of the game. It’s hard to stay in the big leagues all around Europe now so you have to give Hamburg credit. They have the tenth best attacking figure in the Bundesliga which is solid. Where they need to improve is at the back – their average xG created is 1.63 which is pretty high – that’s the fifth worst defensive figure in the Bundesliga this season.
Bayer Leverkusen are trading 2.1 with Hamburg 3.7 and the draw is 3.85 at the time of writing. The 2.1 is a tempting bet on Leverkusen – they are in the top four attacking figures this season and obviously Hamburg have been conceding plenty of chances. However, I’m happy to stay out of the match odds market here because once again a game involving Leverkusen screams goals. We landed a Five Star NAP on Leverkusen v Stuttgart at the weekend on Over 2.5 goals, and that’s trading 1.69 which looks cracking value. Leverkusen have been quite sloppy at the back as well as Hamburg have been creating a decent level of chances. I feel we’re getting enough value at 1.69 for another Five Star NAP!
