A GOOD DAY FOR THE CHAMPIONS? The Winter Million at Windsor and the AW Championship trials at Newcastle are among four meetings trying to beat a mix of rain and sunshine in England today. Champion jockeys Oisin Murphy and Sean Bowen catch the eye of BETDAQ tipster Daqman, who had four winning naps in a row from Sunday to Wednesday inclusive.

STATEIRA MURPHY STARTER

⭕ 1.40 Newcastle (AW Championships Fillies and Mares Trial) Oisin Murphy is back from South Africa for these trials, the champions sole 2026 strike in six home rides at the turn of the year being a winner for Andrew Balding.

Stateira is the Balding-Murphy starter in their five-race blitz on the £23k prizes that make today the championships within a championship.

Eight of these fillies and mares have already scored on AW. Last year’s winner, who took this trial off 90, went on to win the mile championship final in April.

Stateira was eased down to beat Donna Nook at Newcastle in November and Bela Sonata was another all-the-way winner at Newbury in July.

The top AW players off to a flying start to 2026 and with runners in these trials today are Balding (6-18), Ralph Beckett (5-8), George Boughey (3-10) Richard Hannon (4-13), Ian Williams (9-33), Stuart Williams (7-26), and Kevin Phillippart De Foy (2-5), who won the 3.55 with So Darn Hot in 2025 and has Monarch’s Gold in the same race today.

FILANDERER TOP OF THE BILL

⭕ 2.05 Market Rasen Filanderer scythed through the ranks from novice to class 5 then class 3 in a four-in-a-row sequence completed in the autumn.

He won when fresh from the start of that sequence and, after seven weeks off and getting a stone from all bar one of his opponents, the only 10-year-old in the race with a course success is my first choice. BETDAQ 5.0.

Last year’s winner, The Flier Begley, won again on the course in June but Bill Baxter must be second choice today, with Warren Greatrex remaining in fine form (a Wincanton winner yesterday).

Winner of the Pat Taaffe, Listed chase at Punchestown, he ran second to super-stayer Haiti Couleurs, in the Newbury Pertemps qualifier.

BOWEN FORCE BE WITH YOU

⭕ 2.25 Windsor Sean Bowen, who landed his 100th hurdles winner of the season at Wincanton yesterday, has an 18lb pull on a previous Wincanton chase winner, Alfie’s Princess, when he rides Largy Force for Olly Murphy in this mares-only handicap.

Bowen’s record on her was 222 but he got Largy Force up to beat a 122-rated rival at Uttoxeter when the ground turned heavy: it was raining there this morning on soft ground. Betdaq Betting Exchange 5.3.

IT’S A SO-HOT TRIAL AGAIN

⭕ 3.55 Newcastle (AW Championships 3yo Trial) So Darn Hot won this trial and the same section of the February trials at Lingfield in January but lost out in the 2025 final, by which time he’d shot 11lb up the ratings.

With £23k to the winner today and £23k again for February’s trial, a 3yo of potential hidden down the ratings – So Darn Hot won this off 8st – could make the same killing.

It looks like ladies first with Hollie Doyle on Dartrey for Ralph Beckett and and Nicola Currie on Remie Mae (Andrew Balding). Both are set 8st 2lb.

Dartrey is on a four-timer after a Southwell hat-trick in the first six days of the year, two over 6f, one 7f, raising him 21lb. BETDAQ 4.3

Remie Mae is the ’hidden horse’, any price you like this morning (7.8 a place). She has had a run back after a holiday since runner-up in a class-2 at Newmarket.

Clive Cox started 2026 in style with a winner at Wolverhampton on Monday and Bassenthwaite looked in need of a sixth furlong when bolting up in the Black Country in November. BETDAQ 9.8.
