DRAMA OF THE SATURDAY BIG RACE: Jonbon was out on his own at Ascot yesterday in more ways than one. Friendless in the market, his jockey injured, replacement unannounced. Daqman tells the story of how a horse turned drama into a sensational Clarence House double.
TODAY: An early nap at Windsor for man in the spotlight, Harry Cobden.
JONBON HAS THE LAST LAUGH
đŠđ¨ Day of the fallen idols. Would you believe that a champion racehorse never out of the first two in 28 races would start 6-1 in a four-horse race?
Would you believe his rider was not revealed to the public – the jockey himself didnât know – until a few minutes before the âoffâ?
Jonbon, who had gone 16 out of 18 starts at odds-on, including when he won the Clarence House at Ascot last year, was friendless and riderless yesterday, going for a repeat.
All the headlines for Harry Cobdenâs first day since signed up for owner J P McManus were trashed, as he won the very first race before the big stuff even started.
Then he fell – badly bruised – from the limelight, literally dumped by an outsider called Neon Moon in an ordinary handicap chase.
The stewards then gave three reasons why they stopped Harry from riding. âStill medically investigatingâ followed by âheâs stood downâ and finally âheâs signed off,â none of which made a lot of sense to punters.
Meanwhile, James Bowen in the green and gold of J P McManus, was pictured a lone figure waiting on a weighing-room seat until released to ride as deputy dawg.
The race itself saw Jonbon back on his best behaviour, with Il Etait Temps, the horse that thrashed him in the Tingle Creek, becoming another idol downed on the day – fell two out at odds on – while Jonbonâs stamina cut down and passed the Skeltonsâ latest upstart, Thistle Ask.
LAU ACCORDING TO HARRY
â 12.20 Windsor Letâs not allow Harry Cobden to slip one past us this morning, as he did yesterday.
Take some 5.5 Lau and Shaz. Cobden is 35% for trainer Kayley Woollacott, showing a 20-point level stakes profit when they are together.
â 1.50 Windsor Itâs super rare to see Nicky Richards all the way down here from Greystoke. His record is being cited as 1-1 (100%) at Windsor over the years.
I canât fancy his Kelso specialist Nells Son in this one, giving age and weight all round, but Iâll take a closer look at Nab Wood in the next.
Harry Cobdenâs mount, Sans Bruit, is falling nicely in the handicap but is a Spring horse, usually got ready for Aintree.
Mirabad, another Skelton dynamo, gave weight and a beating at Exeter to Joyeuse, who might have won at Ascot yesterday but made a mistake at the last. Betdaq Betting Exchange 4.5.
Mighty Bandit (now a non-runner) and Highlands Legacy were weighted to dead-heat after their one-two at Newbury in December (Torneo fourth). That leaves Legacy as the danger to Mirabad.
ITâS THAT OTHER BOWEN!
â 2.25 Windsor LudâOr climbed 19lb up the handicap, with two fine efforts in November, winning one and then third to French Ship (Royal Rambler sixth), who was put up to 146.
Kap Boy won under Sean Bowen, immediately after moving to Olly Murphy from Paul Nicholls and was afterwards placed twice when raised a grade.
Like LudâOr, he has to step up to 3m. If he takes after his damâs side, Kap Boy can. BETDAQ 10.0.
FORM PROTECTS MATATA
â 3.00 Windsor Three old-timers in this 2m 6f class-2 chase, led by last yearâs Skelton winner, Protektorat, who beat Djelo 23 lengths.
It was only his second success since he defeated Eldorado Allen in a Grade 1 at Haydock in November, 2022.
The fact that heâs 19lb clear of that one now is more about the kudos Eldorado Allen has lost than Protektorat has gained.
Resplendent Grey and Handstands were one-two at Carlisle in November and I prefer Matata.
A class-2 winner here at Windsor, Ryanair contender Matata looked ready for a trip when slamming Il Ridoto nearly 10 lengths. BETDAQ 4.3
