DAQMAN: FOUR WINNERS, 66 POINTS Hot Spots, Supernap and bull’s-eye bets. Daqman attacked the odds from all angles yesterday and won in each category, plus one more for good measure, for a Saturday profit from four winners of 66.88 points.

WON 8-1 FIERCELY PROUD (BETDAQ 12.0 taken)
WON 10-3 MONTREGARD
WON 1-2 ALEXEI (Hot Spot)
WON 4-9 JONBON (supernap)

ANOTHER BULL’S-EYE BID: Today’s targets are bulls’-eye bets for the Punchestown Grand National Trial and another supernap.

ONE-TWO OF TOP HONOURS

The winner takes it all. Not quite true of Jonbon’s magnificent Ascot Chase victory yesterday of courage and stamina over a longer trip that took him to 15 wins and six seconds from 21 starts.

It was also the race that sent the year-older runner-up, Pic d’Orhy, past the million-pound prizemoney mark at age 11.

Two supreme athletes in an old-school battle between Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls made discipline and dedication winning ingredients in a modern age of gain by deliberate chaos.

It was the very best of sporting achievements, rating top honours. And we haven’t even reached Cheltenham yet!

I can’t see Alexei, the Kingwell scorer at Wincanton, coming out of the pack to follow last year’s winner, Golden Ace, in the Champion Hurdle.

He and the second, Rubaud, are good Grade 2, though the heavy Wincanton ground may be offered as an excuse if it’s faster at the Festival.

While Grand Geste was winning a Grand National Trial at Haydock 22 seconds slow, Montregard impressed in an Ascot handicap nearly a second fast. Yet both tracks returned official going as good to soft.

REALITY CHECK FOR FANTASY

1.50 Musselburgh After their triumph with Jonbon, Nicky Henderson and Nico De Boinville intend to take the fallen idol champion-hurdler, Constitution Hill, to Southwell for a Flat race.

Today at Musselburgh they saddle a Listed Flat-race winner, Fantasy World, over hurdles in an attempt to ready him for the Triumph at Cheltenham. The opposition is weak.

BORN TO WIN STAMINA TEST

⭕ 2.30 Punchestown (Grand National Trial) Gordon Elliott has won the last four of these (and 6-8) but three of the quartet failed to win another race in 21 attempts.

The exception was Coko Beach (2023), who went on to victory in the Troytown and success over the Punchestown banks.

Elliott, currently clear of Willie Mullins 155-142 in the Irish trainers’ table, has Jack Kennedy on Lucky Lyreen.

But two of the trainer’s last three strikes in this have been claimed off, and three of his today benefit by 5lb each.

I’ll have my pound on Gavin Cromwell to take a leaf out of Gordon’s book and reverse January form with Lucky Lyreen by claiming off Born Braver, who has always threatened to do better if put into a stamina test. Betdaq Betting Exchange 13.5

Cromwell also saddles The Lovely Man, penalised 10lb in a bid to halt his sequence short of the hat-trick but a superb jumper who could improve again for the extra distance. BETDAQ 8.1.

Willie Mullins’s Uncle Pat is brother to a stayer, Adamantly Chosen, and significant that he was stepped up to the Grade-3 Leopardstown Chase the last day. BETDAQ 6.8.

FREE HIT FOR IN-FORM YARD

⭕ 3.12 Newcastle Free Pic, a CD winner here in the autumn, hasn’t taken to hurdles and can score again on the Flat today after a recent return at Southwell.

The Sue Smith stable is celebrating after winning the Grand National Trial yesterday with Grand Geste, completing a Haydock double after taking the Tommy Whittle in December.
